Questions over source of Axios river pollution

Questions have been put to the government in Greek parliament regarding the cause of the pollution of Axios river and what has been done by the ministry of foreign affairs to ask the northern neighbour, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), what the cause is and what is to be done about the problem.

An environmental organisation from the FYROM, Vila Zora, has announced that large numbers of fish have appeared dead in the Axios (Vardar) river in the central city of Veles. The organisation said the situation could be owed to the profuse dumping of industrial waste or to some serious accident.

MP of leftist Synaspismos, Michalis Papagiannakis, referring to the report; asked the government in parliament what the Greek ministry for foreign affairs had done to ask the FYROM government for an explanation and what was being done to protect one of Greece's most important rivers and the Thermaic Gulf it flows into. In 1997 an agreement overseen by the European Union was made for the cross-border protection of the river.

The response of the government was that an enquiry had been made but had recieved no further information from the government of the neighbouring country.
