The region of Mt. Athos in Chalkidiki, Southern Macedonia, famous for its many monasteries, also boasts some of Greece's finest dishes according to Epiphanios Mylopotaminos. The 130 recipes contained within the book are mainly seafood dishes, but also other ladera (oil), vegetarian dishes with an emphasis on olive oil. Epiphanios uses a wood fire oven and refuses to use any preservatives, only olive oil. The monk at his book launching also stressed that, as is the case with life, love is an essential ingredient for cooking for other people.
