Five players in Greek EURO 2008 squad hail from Macedonia |

Five players in the Greek EURO 2008 squad will also be representing their home region of Macedonia in this month's tournament. Besides Athens which contributes six players, Macedonia boasts the biggest contribution to the Greek cause at the tournament with four hailing from Greece's largest region. Traianos Dellas, while known as the 'Colossus of Rhodes' actually hails from Thessaloniki, the capital of Macedonia. He earned the nickname by marshalling the defence when Greece won the European Championship in 2004. Dellas now plays for and captains AEK Athens. Striker, Dimitrios Salpigidis is also from Thessaloniki and plays for Panathinaikos. Another of Greece's talismen, Ioannis Amanatidis, hails from the West Macedonian city of Kozani, although he moved to Germany age 9 and currently plays for Frankfurt. Alexandros Tziolis is from Katerini in Southern Macedonia and also plays for Panathinaikos. Scorer of the goal which won Greece EURO 2004, Angelos Charisteas is from Strimoniko in the Serres prefecture. Charisteas' club career has stalled since his impressive tournament in 2004 and now plays for Nuremburg in Germany. |
