Default Extreme Rightwing politicians the sign of the future?

Rome votes for right-wing mayor

Mr Alemanno is a former youth leader of the neo-fascist MSI

A right-wing candidate has won Rome's mayoral poll, taking control of the Italian capital from the left for the first time in 15 years.

Gianni Alemanno won 53.6% of the vote, with his centre-left rival Francesco Rutelli trailing at 46.3%.

Mr Alemanno had been criticised for his neo-fascist roots during his campaign, which stressed tackling violent crime.

His win is another triumph for newly-elected centre-right PM Silvio Berlusconi who won April's elections.

The BBC's Christian Fraser in Rome says the city has long been seen as a citadel of the centre left.

"This long battle has ended with our victory," Mr Alemanno, aged 50, was quoted as saying by the AFP as his lead became evident.

"This wasn't a victory for a party but for the whole of Rome," he said. "The result shows I received broad support and I will take that into account when governing the city."

Mr Alemanno campaigned on the ticket of a tough approach on crime, after a series of attacks blamed on immigrants.

He promised to put more police on the streets of the city and to expel thousands of Roma travellers living in illegal settlements around the city.

The conservative wears a Celtic cross, the symbol of the far right, around his neck.

He is a former youth leader of the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement, the MSI, and is married to Isabella Rauti, the daughter of Pino Rauti, a leading figure on the far right.

Mr Alemanno's victory might also be the final slap in the face for the outgoing centre-left government which collapsed in spectacular style earlier this year, our correspondent says.

Mr Alemanno's rival in the contest was outgoing Deputy PM Francesco Rutelli.

He must carry part of the blame for the failures of Romano Prodi's government - and accordingly has just been punished, our correspondent says.

People are running scared with all news about terrorism, illigal immigration, job losses, globalisation and types of cospirational theories.People tend to lose their sight of reality. They look for tough & honest politicians who will fight for their "rights",racism will start reaping it's ugly head and big player manipulators will take advantage of these weaknesses.History does tend to repeat itself and man still has not learnt..........

There has been a disturbing rise in the far right in the UK as well. The British National Party (which is a club of semi-literate bigots and the lowest of the low in its genre across Europe) a few days ago gained its first seat in the London Assembly and in a few councils throughout the country, this despite campaigning from various anti-fascist groups and even the Church!

What do you mean 'even the church'? Seems to me the Anglican Church is a church on the far left if there ever was one.

I mean the Church is expected to keep out of politics. Even Anthimos in Greece has never explicitly supported or opposed individual candidates or parties. I think in the USA, doing so is illegal.

There is a legal seperation of church in state in the United States. But should we us the United States as a good example. I am an open minded individual but extremely liberal governments are destroying the United States and Europe. We have 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States who pay no social security but exhaust it at the same time. The U.S. has no official language and will end up having the Canadian situation. Meaning a population split between two languages. Political correctness is destroying the United States. God forbid you report that a Middle Esatern man is acting peculiar you are labeled a racist. Europe is even more to the left. However in the United States we don't have the Middle East right next door. I believe that center is the solution but liberalism is ludicrous in this age and time.

Immigration in itself is not a problem in my opinion. The wealthy societies of Europe and America have a moral obligation to welcome refugees and a certain number of migrants. The problem is with how states choose to handle immigration.

I may have misunderstood the system in the USA, but I think the system they have - called the "melting pot" - is to allow immigrants into the country and, without state intervention, just let them integrate/assimilate. I think that model is much better than the "multiculturalism" practiced in the EU which involves allowing immigrants in and then curtailing the cultural rights of the majority so that the immigrants can effortlessly preserve their cultures in their entirety, while actively encouraging them to do so; this is basically a cultural genocide of the majority populations. Thankfully, mainstream politicians are beginning to abandon "multiculturalism" and are starting to take steps to integrate migrants.

Draco, you must have been reading about the America of the 1960's and 1970's. The melting pot theory has been replaced by the mosaic. Every culture is a beautiful different colored stone and together we make a picture. Draco its all about multiculturalism in the United States. It is getting worse than Europe.

The multicultural idea is simply not possible, it's only natural for different cultures to converge. This is how the nations of Europe developed in the first place: successions of cultures moving in and integrating with the existing cultures (the melting pot!). Artificially keeping the cultures separate by victimising and suppressing the majority (through political correctness, quotas etc) serves nothing other than to polarise communities and is unsettlingly reminiscent of apartheid (which is universally recognised as a crime against humanity). In Europe, people are beginning to wake up, one of the symptoms of this is the rise of the far right (which will send the message to the mainstream politicians).

Regarding the Marxist Association formerly known as the Anglican Church, look at what the Archbishop of York has to say about multiculturalism. It looks like there's hope for this church yet...

Also, zefs, there is another thread that may interest you.
