| The Islamic presence in Thrace dates as far back as the early 7th century. For it was from this period that the armies of the Ummayad Caliphate were camped in Eastern Thrace during their long but ultimately failed attempt to capture Constantinople, the then-formidable capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium). From 674-677, the Arabs even established a settlement, Cyzikos, just south of the Roman capital. Ever since that time, Muslims were known to the Bulgars, themselves only recently settled in Thrace. And ever since that time, according to Pomak scholars today, small numbers of Bulgarians have been embracing Islam upon contact with pious Muslims. During the beginning of the 10th century, when the Volga Bulgars were converting en masse to Islam, the leader of their kindred Bulgars in the Balkans, Tsar Simeon (893-927), was also attempting to secure an alliance with the Arab-led Islamic world against a common Imperial Christian foe. Simeon was seeking to loan Muslim fleets in a bold attempt to capture the seat of the Roman Empire for himself. However, the Byzantines were wise to the Bulgarian plan and successfully thwarted Simeon's ambitions. Ironically, that same century saw the Byzantines themselves employ Muslim loan troops. However, this time the Islamic army-for-hire comprised not Arabs, but 'Konyar Turks'. The Byzantines stationed their Muslim mercanary army in Western Thrace, the Rhodopes and Vardar and Pirin Macedonia - precisely were Pomaks are found today - to prevent Slavic and Latin domination of these regions. By the 13th century, as a result of peaceful missionary activity from the Muslim troops, Islam had become firmly established amongst the Rhodope and Macedonian Slavs. Thus, a large part of Thrace had been peacefully won over to Islam even before the Ottoman conquest. In contrast, the earlier experience of the Bulgarians with Christianity was a far more brutal one: the Bulgarian Court became Christian only after most of the nation's noblility were butchered by King Boris. When the Ottomans did begin their conquest of Macedonia and Bulgaria in the 1300s, the descendants of the Bulgarian Muslim converts aided their co-religionists greatly by serving as vanguards, rearguards, auxiliary troops and reconnaissance units for the main Ottoman forces. Hence, Christian Bulgars named their Muslim counterparts "Pomagach" (supporter/helper) from whence the term was shortened to 'Pomak'. It is worth noting that official Greek anthropology holds that the Pomaks, who can also be found in the provinces of Xanthi and Rhodope in Greece, are directly descended from the Agrians, an ancient Thracian tribe which was known to inhabit the Rhodope region. The Thracians, along with their racially akin Illyrians and Dacians, were the original inhabitants of the Balkans before the great Bulgar and Slav migrations. According to the Thracian hypothesis, the Agrians were in turn Hellenised, Latinised, Slavicised, Christianised and finally Islamised. This hypothesis is usually dismissed in academic circles outside Greece in favour of the more universally accepted view that the Pomaks are no more than an old Bulgarian people distinguished by their Islamic faith and their preservation of early Bulgar language and culture. However, the two theories are not mutually exclusive. The isolation that the Rhodope mountains affords is given by Bulgarian anthropologists as the main factor explaining the unique purity of the Pomak dialect (Greek: Poμ•koi) and culture. But it is for precisely the same reason - geographically-enforced solitude - that it is also equally plausable that mountain-ranging Thracians survived as a racial unit before they mixed with the early Bulgar tribes that settled in the Balkan peninsula after the fall of Rome. source http://europeans.ws/ |

Pomaks are of bulgarian origin. Bulgarian historians had proven they were forced to switch their religion in order not to die. However, most bulgarians have strong anti-pomaks feelings(yes me too) because they are lets say the local terrorizers of bulgarian poeople back then. Instead of sending tukish army to crush rebelions turks used pomaks to do the job. They are the ugliest cowardly branch of the bulgarian nation. Bulgaria will get rid of them with joy when we have an opportunity to do so. One advice - burn to hell the pomak villages in Giumordjina region. These bastards had pursued 200 000 bulgarian from southern thrace in 1913 just because they were cristians and they had an opportiunity to do so. The bulgarian pomaks are now funded by Saudis islam schools. Kill them all

Truth Bearer, I think that the reason is one and the same. Both the Bulgarians and the Greeks are afraid of the Pomaks because they feel that this minority cannot be trusted. But there is a different approach in Bulgaria and Greece on this matter. In my country, there were attempts to give "Bulgarian conscience" to Pomaks in the later years of the Communist rule. They were given Christian names and forced to get rid of their habits and traditions. After the fall of Communist, however, nobody cares of them any more and the Bulgarian Pomaks fell under the influence of the Freedom and Rights Movement (a Turkish party under the tiny veil of a democratic and liberal movement). And, because of their lack of clear national conscience, they have been successfully wooed by Islamic fundamentalists. In the case of Greece, as it can been seen from the article, there was initial fear of making Pomaks fifth column of Communist Bulgaria. Instead, the authorities did their best in making them a possible fifth column of the islamic Turkish state (pray God it never happen). The Muslim religion bring Pomaks close to the Turks, all a whole. Of course, there are Pomaks who hate the Turks and refuse to be identifies with them, but I don't think that their number is great (especially in the villages)... |

No you will be suprised how many Pomaks hate the Turks mainly because the Turks don't recognize them as Pomaks but only as Turks even here in Melbourne the West Thracian community had anti Turkish feelings but because of the Orthodox prejudices against Moslems they were forced to ask support from the Turks who by the way built them a huge big building in Windsor a suburb in Melbourne as long as the fly the Turkish flag.

Are u living in Melbourne, TB? What u are telling is very interesting. The situation there may be somewhat peculiar, because the Pomaks would insist on their specific roots. But they still have to rely on the Turks, as u say... And the Turks are has a strong sense of nationalism since the Ataturk times... BTW, do u know that Ataturk's mother was a Pomak? I learned it myself not long time ago: The father of modern Turkey Kemal Ataturk (Mustafa Kemal pasha) was born in Thessaloniki (Soloun, Selyanik) at the beginning of March of 1881 and died in early November of 1938 in Istanbul (Constantinople). His father was of mixed heritage - Albanian and Dyonme./The Dyonmes were Islamized Jews./ Ataturk's mother was a Pomak./The Pomaks are Muslim ethnic Bulgarians./ Her ancestors came from the areas of Langadha (Lagadina) and Edessa (Voden, Vodina). An uncle of mine - a native of Aegean Macedonia, just like Ataturk - was posted as a Bulgarian diplomat in Ankara during the 1930's, and had the opportunity to converse with his fellow Macedonian, Ataturk, in their mothers'language, that is Bulgarian. (So says one Riste Lerinski in one forum) Last edited by Rhino; 08-31-2007 at 07:29 AM. |
