What happened in the end?
Did we tell them Orpheus is from hellenic thrace?
That he is part of Greek Culture since forever?
That its our "Heritage" as well?

Ciconians lived in Greece so that claim of theirs is out the window.
Next is where he was born they claimed this
» Tatul - the possible tomb of Orpheus @ Discover Ancient Bulgaria
I dont buy this , too convenient.
Other than the fact he supposedly is a mythological figure if we accept he was real then all the argonauts and heroes and gods of greek myth were and are real.Anyway he was King in Ciconia so this is the Land of Orpheus(other than the fact saved hymns are in Greek).

Orpheus and Thracians Bulgarians and exclusively at that?
Greek myths and Thracians Bulgarians and we are not to talk about it?
Translated
the Greek minister of Tourism Mr Dimitris Avramo'poylos, agreed with his bulgarian counterpart Nina Tsj'lova, they materialise the two countries common tourist campaign, titled "You come in Rodopi(Orpheus homeland its actually ciconia in greek thrace in the coastline), the homeland of Orpheus" (!!!)."You imagine", stressed Mr Koyrjannj'dis, "came in a proportional agreement Mr Avramo'poylos with the Citizens of the Yougoslavian Republic of Macedonia and she agreed in the concretisation of proportional campaign under the title" You come in Macedonia, the homeland of Great Alexandros "(!!!). the same moment in deed, where Mr Avramo'poylos advanced in this agreement of shame, his counterpart declared that" Bulgaria is not to resign from its effort to show that orpheus is a bulgarian(!!??) myth naturally and the bulgarian archeologist mr Oftsarof that "this agreement is shame, it should not we give in the Greeks the right to speak for the Orpheus, it should we protect the Bulgarian cultural and historical heritage!!!!??"

We let these guys in the EU

Bulgarians rage over 'Orpheus and liars'
By Harry de Quetteville in Athens
(Filed: 07/03/2005)

One of the ancient world's most celebrated love stories has led to a modern-day argument after Bulgaria claimed that the "Greek myth" of the fabled musician Orpheus is not Greek at all.

The tale of love and loss between Orpheus and Eurydice is as famous as the tragedy of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. But more than two and a half millennia after the pair are thought to have lived, Greece and Bulgaria are fighting over the right to claim them as their own.

"Orpheus lived in Bulgaria," Prof Nikolay Ovcharov, a Bulgarian archaeologist, said yesterday. "Greeks say he was Greek, but it's not true, that is simply Greek nationalism."

Last summer Prof Ovcharov led an expedition in southern Bulgaria which claimed to have located Orpheus's burial site.

However, a new advertising campaign is to promote Greece as the "land of mythical Orpheus", sparking outrage in Sofia.

Donka Sokolova, the head of the Bulgarian Association of Travel Agencies, said the campaign was "a twist of history". But Alexandra Christopoulou, of Athens's National Archaeological Museum, hit back at Bulgarian "propaganda".

"Nations claim Greek heroes all the time," she said. "It happened with Alexander the Great and now with Orpheus. Bulgaria did not even exist at the time."

Argonautica point out that Orpheus was born in Mount Elikon at Livithra (Piplan, Pieria), and that his mother was Calliope, the Muse of epic poetry. In Greece.

Pausanias, mention as about the Thracians , Greeks and Orpheus

Description of Hellas 9.30

[4] By the side of Orpheus the Thracian stands a statue of Telete, and around him are beasts of stone and bronze listening to his singing. There are many untruths believed by the Greeks, one of which is that Orpheus was a son of the Muse Calliope, and not of the daughter of Pierus, that the beasts followed him fascinated by his songs, and that he went down alive to Hades to ask for his wife from the gods below. In my opinion Orpheus excelled his predecessors in the beauty of his verse, and reached a high degree of power because he was believed to have discovered mysteries, purification from sins, cures of diseases and means of averting divine wrath.

[5] But they say that the women of the Thracians plotted his death, because he had persuaded their husbands to accompany him in his wanderings, but dared not carry out their intention through fear of their husbands. Flushed with wine, however, they dared the deed, and hereafter the custom of their men has been to march to battle drunk. Some say that Orpheus came to his end by being struck by a thunderbolt, hurled at him by the god because he revealed sayings in the mysteries to men who had not heard them before.

[6] Others have said that his wife died before him, and that for her sake he came to Aornum in Thesprotis, where of old was an oracle of the dead. He thought, they say, that the soul of Eurydice followed him, but turning round he lost her, and committed suicide for grief. The Thracians say that such nightingales as nest on the grave of Orpheus sing more sweetly and louder than others.

Description of Hellas 7.5
[8] but the Thracian women, both the slaves and the free who lived there, offered themselves to be shorn. And so the men of Erythrae towed the raft ashore. Accordingly no women except Thracian women are allowed within the sanctuary of Heracles, and the hair rope is still kept by the natives. The same people say that the fisherman recovered his sight and retained it for the rest of his life.

The Bulgarian Minister of Tourism and the archaeologist made nationalistic and unreal claims they cannot back since they both lied on the issue in a desire to claim something they cannot. If they wanted to be sincere they would have not made such extremist and moronic claims lying on mythology,history,geography....
