Default Language, tradition and the name....

...........but not a single race or people in present times.

In ancient times, before dispersal and some time thereafter-a people, ethnos. That is according to her, and it is valid for the period treated in the book-prehistory to early medieval times

But with the blending with various races and peoples, adoption of different religions, divergence in language, transformation of culture, today Slavs are a conglomerate of peoples united by some common traits, but divided by other characteristics with differentiate them from other Slavs.

Being a Serb is much different from being Polish.Being Bulgarian is much different than being a Slovenian etc.

Very intresting defenition.Kurta mention that he first clear statement that “we are Slavs” comes from the twelfth-century Russian Primary Chronicle. With this chronicle, however, the making of the Slavs ends and another story begins: that of their “national” use for claims to ancestry.
The making of the Slavs was less a matter of ethnogenesis and more one of invention, imagining and labeling by Byzantine authors. Actually the Buzantines has the tence of the Geographical false.

Kurta is wrong with his thesis, whose wealth of reference to back it up is impressive and so is the author deffinition, but the mention of Slavs as "Veneti/Venedi" (not to be confused with a northern paleoitalic ethnic group) plus the ubiquos presence of sl-, slo-, sla-, root in the Slavic languages, in onomastics, geonimy, languages in areas which had no direct contact with Byzantium, usage Sla- ethnonymes by Germans (plus "Windisch"/"Wendisch") and Balts, usage by Arab travelers ("Sakalib") etc. deny his thesis, although they do not exclude it from the circle of interesting theories
