Tsar Samuil died at the age of 70 as a consequence of a severe injury of the left temple, Bulgarian scientists said Thursday after the reconstruction of the skull of the 11th century Macedonian emperor.

"While in battle, Tsar Samuil probably tried to protect himself by lifting his arms to the head level, when both of hi supper limbs were broken," said Professor Jordan Jordanov, the head of the Anthropology Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

According to Bulgarian scientists, the fact that the fractured bones grew in incorrectly suggests that Samuil received no treatment after sustaining severe injuries.

In addition, it is almost certain that Samuil could not feed because the function of his lower jaw was heavily impaired, Jordanov said

The scalp of Macedonian Tsar was uncovered in a coffin in the southern coast of Prespa Lake in 1969, on Greek territory.

Tsar Samuil ruled the great Samuil's empire covering the territories of current Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, northwest Greece and northern and western Bulgaria between the 10th and 11th century.
