Interestingly the official FYROM census of 2002 counted the Gorani (5.86% of the population) as "Macedonians". Without the Gorani the "Macedonians" are less than 60% of the population: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demogra...c_of_Macedonia

There are two "types" of Gorani or Goranci. Those that live in Kosovo and those that live in FYROM.They speak Torliak a dialect more close to Serbs. FYROM call them as Torbesi and a lot of them as identified as Turks. Gorani mean mountain since Gora in Slavic mean mount. There is intresting article from antibaro and you can read it here.
Of course FYROM vaptizied them as Makedonci!!!

Gorani seem to speak language transitory in some aspect to Serbian and to certain, more crucial aspects to Bulgarian.Combined with archaisms, turko-arab-persian-albanian words and stylistic peculiarities it sounds distinct.Bulgarian media are full of spectacular accounts about the "forgotten kinsmen" etc. but here we have ethnic flotancy: out of three brothers, the one holding a candy-store in Belgrade shall be a "Serb", one in Sophia "a Bulgarian" the third in Skoplye a "pure Macedonian" etc.

Objectively, their language sounds much more "makedonski" than Serbian and loosely it has certain features relating it to East FYROMian.Serbian linguists exclude it from the list of Serbian dialects. But they prefer to designate themselves "Gorani" and they see "big brother" in Bosnian Slavic Muslims with which they identify when outside their native area.

Most of those who migrated to the city of Skoplje and elsewhere in FYROM.In the place itself they have marginal "Macedonian" organization led by Ismail Boyda. But there, in Gora there are very few declared Pseudomacedonians.

There is great outpouring of euphoria in Bulgaria about them in recent couple of years, not rarely coupled with unrealistic, "virtual expansions" of Bulgarian ethnic space to the West of Serbia-Bulgaria border and to the north of FYROM.

Gorani (ethnic group)

Gorani (Goranci, Cyrillic: Горанци) are a minority South Slavic ethnic group, living in the mountainous Gora-Draga region, just south of Prizren in Kosovo, north-western Republic of Macedonia in the ar Planina region near Tetovo, as well as in north-eastern Albania (most notably in Shishtavec (Local Slavic: Шиштејец, itejec) in Kuks County).

Etymology

The Gora region is covered with rough terrain, its name even means 'mountain' in Slavic and the name of its people Highlanders. Gorani (Goranci, Cyrillic: Горанци) are a minority South Slavic ethnic group, living in the mountainous Gora-Draga region, just south of Prizren in Serbia, north-western Republic of Macedonia in the ar Planina region near Tetovo, as well as in north-eastern Albania (most notably in Shishtavec (Local Slavic: Шиштејец, itejec) in Kuks County).
