Default What happened with the south of Fyrom after 4th century A.D.

Having personally seen many Greek evidence in the south of Fyrom right up to the 4th /5th c.A.D. as in Lychnidos=Ohrid and the civilisation was large with theaters and many tomb stones written in Greek and many evidence shows it supported a large Greek community, and the area had a big Greek culture as in many temples and shrines are found all over the place especially around the city's old citadel/acropolis.

What exactly happened after the earthquake that destroyed much of southern Fyrom in the late 5th century A.D.? i know there was a slavic invasion ...but what exactly happened? was there a mixture...or did the original Greek inhabitants fled to the south or stayed and fled to nearby villages or started new settlements themselves...

What happened to the once so mighty Dessaretes and it's inhabitants?

This is a burning question that baffles me and personally i think there was a mixture with the invading Slav-Bulgars but to what extend..and looking at the Byzantine empire that settled there in the 10th c.A.D. the Samuil Empire 500 years later ..how many original elements were still at place...could an entire well developed culture dissappear in just 500 years?

Your question to that should be the way the Byzantine emperors were relocating entire populations around the empire.
Vast imperial territories were completely depopulated during the barbarian invasions from the north and the east.
Usually from territories who suffered substantial amount of invasions populations were moved to safer areas, and then when the greek territories were liberated once more they were repopulated.
That was the byzantine game of control.
So most likely the greek poluations were moved to safer areas of the empire till the byzantine reconquista and then populations moved back again.
I think there is your answer.

Hi !

So the once Hellenic population of the area ,were relocated and at Samuil reign they were reinstated and moved back to original areas...in what timespan did this remigration happen?

In several hundreds of years ?
And did the Byzantine empire of Ohrid under Samuil rule in Ohrid still carry the Hellenic "key" or tradition after the "Slavic" invasion?

Point is how Slavic were the Samuil's empire's inhabitants of the Ohrid area in about 1000 A.D. ?

well concidering that sv.kiril and metodij created the slavic alphabet in the late 800's and kliment and naum continuing their mission to give the slas their own alphabet, i would say that by the time samoil was in power most of the education was in slavic, the people of the region had been slavic for 100's of years since the arrival of the slavs.
