This winter’s artistic event for Thessaloniki is the big Exhibition of Engravings entitled «Picasso, Suite 347», that will open its doors for the first time in Greece at the Teloglion Foundation of Art A.U.TH., starting January 25th 2008. The exhibition will be opened by his Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr Karolos Papoulias. This significant collection consists of 347 engravings that Picasso created from March 16th till October 5th 1968 and belongs to the Bancaja Foundation of Valencia. It is one of the five series of engravings (Epreuve d’ artiste) known, to bear Picasso’s signature, in its whole.

The series contains most of the Spanish artist’s favorite subject matters: works that pertain to the history of painting, the female nude, the world of bullfighting and flamenco, the Greek roman mythology and mainly the Mediterranean landscape. References are also made to the everyday life and to a 16th century Spanish novel, called “La Celestina”. The series includes works of different techniques• besides, it is well known that Picasso often combined techniques and intervened during the printing process. The vast variety in sizes is of particular interest, something which is indicative of the way Picasso made use of space.

Rarely does one have a chance to see such a significant and large collection of Picasso’s works, providing ample opportunity for implementing special educational programs and familiarizing visitors with the great artist’s work. This is also the opportunity of a lifetime for Greeks in Thessaloniki to attend such a large scale arts event, which has already been on display in New York, Paris and Helsinki and is going to be hosted in great museums in Europe, China and Australia.
“Series 347 is a collection of etchings created by Picasso during his 7-month stay at his Mougins house in Northern France, in 1968, precisely 40 years ago. This is Picasso’s greatest collection of etchings: 347 works, constituting one of the artist’s three most important collections owned by Bancaja together with Suite Vollard, approximately 100 etchings from 1930-38 and Suite 156 that follows during 1970-1972” as the General Secretary of the Telogion Foundation Professor Alexandra Voutyra comments.

“Not only is Suite 347 renowned for its size, but it is also significant for the scarcity of its printed copies and its misfortune, as most engravings in the series were sold individually. Bancaja possesses one of the few complete series - epreuves d’ artiste – signed by Picasso himself. As it was difficult for the works to be frequently exhibited, they are preserved in pristine condition, as if they were freshly printed.”

“This is a massive collection of etchings completed rapidly, within just a few months of a significant year in European history, 1968. Technically, this is a study on the history of engraving, for the painter’s boldness, skilled processing and resourcefulness. In terms of subject matter Picasso appears to incorporate all his previous themes, drawing on previous works of his, but also on great masters of the past, such as el Greco, Velasquez, Poussin, Goya, Fussli, Ingres, Delacroix, Courbet, Mane etc. It is a true lesson in art history with the sharpness, the penetrating mind, the irony or the playful mood of an extremely gifted creator, that never ceases to amaze and provoke us.”

“Picasso dips his chisel in his lively, energetic and frantically creative spirit and carves on the copper plates with absolute certainty in handling the medium, unbelievable precision and firmness - let us not forget that he is 87 years old -, supporting his outstanding visual memory of past works, of faces and expressions, and moreover with an unrestrained imagination and inventiveness, which unfold his thoughts with a sense of irony, playfulness, honesty and passion.”

“The dominant theme in Series 347, and also one of Picasso’s obsessions, is the woman, the female nude. The love scenes, which appear either in the topic “The Painter and his model”, his Celestines and mainly in Rafael with Fornarina, express all of his passion for life, creation and painting itself. Women bathing, or prostitutes in brothels or in the painter’s studio, abduction scenes in Celestines, seem to appease Picasso’s obsessions concerning women.”

”T. Spiteris Archive of the Teloglion Foundation provided us with valuable material on the way the Press received this particular work of Picasso in France at the time. The early texts of pressmen Piero and Aldo Crommelynck, of Pierre Daix, the exhibition in Galerie Louise Leiris, ample photographic material of Picasso in Mougins over that period, material on the great exhibition in 1965, unpublished poems and plays by Picasso on the Burial of Count Orgaz, -el Greco’s work-, a few designs of this Series commented by Beatrice Spiliadi, are only some of the treasures contained in T. Spiteris Archive, kept in Teloglion Foundation.”

In T. Spiteri’s Archive we are observing Picasso’s mature years through press clips of that period mainly in France. Coincidentally, it seems as though they were gathered to interpret and explain mature Picasso. Picasso met Jacqueline in 1954. The Record contains a rich photographic tribute of 1965 to the house in Mougins, to the works created there, often with Zacqueline present, giving us an idea of the space where Series 347 came into existence. In a 19/6/1968 clip we read of Picasso’s large donation of 58 paintings of the Series related to the work Las Meninas by Velasquez in the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, a donation which was promised to his childhood friend and loyal partner Jaime Sabartès. T. Spiteri’s Archive also includes publications concerning the earliest exhibition of Series 347 in Paris at the Galerie Louise Leiris. The publications referring to Picasso’s passing in 1973 are also numerous. What is more, a significant part of publications in T. Spiteri’s Archive are about the way the Greek Press received Picasso’s work.”

Brief biography of Pablo Picasso


Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881. His family settled in 1895 in Barcelona, the metropolis of that period in full bloom. He studied in the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. Picasso was gradually placed among the boheme circles and was introduced to the new philosophical, political, musical and literary trends of the time. The “blue period” starts in 1901. Picasso settles for life in 1904 in Paris, the unquestionable capital of arts of that period, which kept however its doors shut for new artists. He became familiar with the bohemian way of life in Montmartre living in the famous Bateau Lavoir. That is when the “pink period” begins.” “Les Demoiselles d’ Avignon», completed in 1907, sets the foundation for Cubism. Picasso collides for the first time with the traditional perspective and suggests a new way of spatial perception. After the First World War he engages into the world of spectacle, to which he devotes himself as a stage designer and costume designer. He never admitted himself to have supported the Surrealism movement, although he closely cooperated with its representatives and borrowed several elements from it. The attack of the German Luftwaffe –allies of dictator Franco-, against the small, defenseless, Basque city of Guernica and its bombing to the ground with 500 pounds of bombs and more than 3.000 fire bombs, that caused the world’s outcry, overwhelms him and leads him to create his mythical work Guernica, a masterpiece that according to Picasso, it conveys “his hatred for the military that plunged Spain into an ocean of grief and death”.
After World War 2 he becomes member of the Communist Party and he is honored twice, in 1950 and in 1962 with the Lenin price. In 1957 he creates the Series Las Meninas. During the 60s the “The Painter and his model” Series become dominant, reflecting Picasso’s work on “his personal ghosts”, private moments where sex predominated. Despite his age he never ceased to work on a series of linocut etchings, a new technique for that period.
He died in April 8, 1973 in Mougins of Southern France.
Picasso left his undying mark on the world stardom. His works, be they etchings, oil paintings, lithographies, ceramics, sculptures, collages, show no sign of barren repetition. Picasso is always productive and precise, with inexhaustible creativity, a unique personality, a constant rebirth of artistic ideas, an ability to experiment, and thus, he is set on the world map as a genius and a model artist of the 20th century.

A journalist admires the creations of Pablo Picasso during yesterday’s media tour of an exhibition of the artist’s engravings in Thessaloniki. The show opened to the public at the city’s Telloglion Arts Foundation yesterday and is to run until April 16, when it will be transferred to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games.

'Εκθεση με έργα του Πάμπλο Πικάσο στη Θεσσαλονίκη

Πρόσωπα και γεγονότα της χρονιάς -ορόσημο- αυτής του 1968, καταγράφει στα 347 χαρακτικά έργα που φιλοτέχνησε ο κορυφαίος Ισπανός ζωγράφος Πάμπλο Πικάσο και που εκτίθενται από σήμερα για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα στο Τελλόγλειο Ιδρυμα Τεχνών της Θεσσαλονίκης.

Η «Σουίτα 347» όπως τιτλοφορείται η μεγάλη έκθεση των χαρακτικών αποτελείται από 347 μέρη, φιλοτεχνημένα (κατά μέσο όρο δυο την ημέρα όπως προκύπτει από τις χειρόγραφες του καλλιτέχνη ημερομηνίες που φέρουν τα έργα ) από τον Πάμπλο Πικάσο στο διάστημα από τις 16 Μαρτίου 1968 ως τις 5 Οκτωβρίου του ίδιου χρόνου.

Στα έργα που ανήκουν στο ίδρυμα «Bancaja», ο Πικάσο χαράσσει γεγονότα της ιδεολογικής και πολιτικής έκρηξης του Μάη του 68 στο Παρίσι, πρόσωπα όπως ο Σαρλ Ντε Γκολ και ο Ζορζ Πομπιντού, ο Ντελακρουά αλλά κυρίως το θέμα-εμμονή του. Τη γυναίκα και το γυναικείο κορμί.

Η συλλογή με το μεγαλύτερο αριθμητικά σύνολο έργων (347) που χάραξε ο Πικάσο μέσα σε διάστημα μόλις 200 ημερών και σε ηλικία 87 ετών, εκτός από το μέγεθός της εντυπωσιάζει για την ταχύτητα με την οποία δημιουργήθηκε, την ποικιλία των θεμάτων, αλλά και για την τεχνική πολυμορφία των έργων (Ο καλλιτέχνης χρησιμοποιεί για τη φιλοτέχνηση τους υλικά όπως ζάχαρη, άμμο, γύψο, χημικά κ.ά.) αλλά και για την σχεδόν ανακεφαλαίωση της θεματολογίας του κάνει εικαστικές αναφορές σε παλαιότερα έργα του, αλλά και σε καλλιτέχνες- δασκάλους όπως οι: Γκρέκο, Βελάσκεθ, Γκόγια, Μανέ, κ.ά.).

Τα έργα μεταφέρθηκαν στη Θεσσαλονίκη οδικώς από τη Βαλένθια της Ισπανίας και έφτασαν στη Θεσσαλονίκη το περασμένο Σάββατο. Τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης θα πραγματοποιηθούν απόψε στις 19.00 από τον υπουργό Μακεδονίας-Θράκης κ. Μαργαρίτη Τζίμα.

«Η Σειρά 347 είναι ένα σύνολο χαρακτικών που ο Πικάσο πραγματοποίησε στο διάστημα 7 μηνών στο σπίτι του στην πόλη Μουζέν στη Νότιο Γαλλία το 1968, ακριβώς 40 χρόνια πριν. Πρόκειται για το μεγαλύτερο σύνολο έργων χαρακτικής του Πικάσο: 347 έργα, ένα από τα τρία σημαντικότερα σύνολα του καλλιτέχνη που έχει στην κατοχή της η Bancaja μαζί με την Suite Vollard, 100 περίπου χαρακτικά του 1930-38 και την Suite 156 που ακολουθεί τα χρόνια 1970-1972» σημειώνει η Γενική Γραμματέας του Τελλογλείου καθηγήτρια Αλεξάνδρα Βουτυρά.

«Η Suite 347, εκτός από το μέγεθός της, είναι σημαντική γιατί τυπώθηκε σε λίγα αντίτυπα και ατύχησε, καθώς έσπασαν οι περισσότερες σειρές και τα χαρακτικά πουλήθηκαν μεμονωμένα. Η Bancaja κατέχει μια από τις ελάχιστες πλήρεις σειρές - epreuves d' artiste - με την υπογραφή του ίδιου του Πικάσο. Τα έργα, καθώς ήταν δύσκολο να εκτεθούν συχνά, διατηρούνται σε άριστη κατάσταση, σαν να βγήκαν χθες από την πρέσα του τυπογράφου».

Η έκθεση των έργων συνοδεύεται από σπάνιο υλικό, έντυπα, δημοσιεύσεις, αποσπάσματα συνεντεύξεων του 87χρονου τότε καλλιτέχνη που ζούσε τα τελευταία χρόνια της ζωής του (πέθανε τον Απρίλιο του 1973 σε ηλικία 92 ετών) στην πόλη Μουζέν της Γαλλίας όπου και φιλοτέχνησε τη συγκεκριμένη σειρά χαρακτικών.

Το υλικό προέρχεται από το αρχείο Σπητέρη που έχει παραχωρηθεί στο Τελλόγλειο ίδρυμα και σ΄ αυτό εμπεριέχονται (και εκτίθενται) οι δημοσιεύσεις που αφορούν την πρώτη έκθεση της Σειράς 347 στο Παρίσι στην Galerie Louise Leiris. Πολλά είναι τα δημοσιεύματα που αναφέρονται στον θάνατο του Πικάσο το 1973. Επίσης ένα σημαντικό τμήμα δημοσιευμάτων του Αρχείου Σπητέρη αφορούν την υποδοχή του έργου του Πικάσο από τον ελληνικό και ξένο τύπο.

Η συλλογή των χαρακτικών έργων του Πικάσο που έχει ήδη παρουσιαστεί στη Νέα Υόρκη, το Παρίσι και το Ελσίνκι, θα παραμείνει ανοιχτή για το κοινό της Θεσσαλονίκης από σήμερα ως τις 16 Απριλίου του 2008. Στη συνέχεια θα μεταφερθεί και θα εκτεθεί σε μεγάλα μουσεία της Ευρώπης, της Αυστραλίας και της Κίνας - στο πλαίσιο των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων.

Ο Πικάσο χαράζει την Ιστορία...

«Ο ζωγράφος δεν σταματά ποτέ να εργάζεται. Δεν υπάρχει στιγμή που μπορείς να πεις: δούλεψα πολύ, αύριο είναι Κυριακή. Μπορεί να αφήσεις ένα έργο στην άκρη λέγοντας ότι δεν θα το ξαναπιάσεις. Αλλά ποτέ δεν μπορείς να βάλεις τη λέξη τέλος», έλεγε ο Πάμπλο Πικάσο το 1968. Και αυτά ακριβώς τα λόγια έκανε πράξη τότε, εποχή πολιτικών ταραχών σε όλο τον κόσμο, δουλεύοντας με φρενήρη δημιουργικότητα και απαράμιλλη ζωτικότητα.



Απομονωμένος στη Μουζέν της Nότιας Γαλλίας, με μοναδική παρέα τη σύζυγό του Ζακλίν και συντροφιά τις εφημερίδες και σπανίως την τηλεόραση, ο Πικάσο δημιούργησε τη «Suite 347». Πρόκειται για 347 έργα χαρακτικής που σήμερα ανήκουν στο Iδρυμα Bancaja Foundation της Βαλένθια και εκτίθενται στο Τελλόγλειο Iδρυμα Τεχνών του ΑΠΘ στη Θεσσαλονίκη.

«Η “Suite 347” είναι ένας άθλος της χαρακτικής», λέει ξεναγώντας μας στον χώρο η κ. Αλεξάνδρα Βουτυρά, επιμελήτρια της έκθεσης. «Από το πρώτο έως το τελευταίο έργο μεσολαβούν επτά μήνες και μπορεί κανείς να δει πώς προχωράει ο ζωγράφος από τη μια μέρα στην άλλη. Αν και 87 χρόνων, είναι τρομερά παραγωγικός. Υπάρχουν μέρες που ολοκληρώνει ακόμη και 5 ή 6 έργα».



Τα υπογεγραμμένα από τον ίδιο τον Πικάσο πρωτότυπα εκτίθενται σε χρονολογική σειρά. «Είναι ένα καταπληκτικό ημερολόγιο του καλλιτέχνη, μια αποκάλυψη της σκέψης του», εξηγεί η κ. Βουτυρά.
«Για να ολοκληρώσει κανείς την περιήγηση χρειάζεται δυόμισι ώρες, αφού είναι σημαντικό να διαβάσει και τις λεζάντες. Στη “Suite 347” μιλάει ο ίδιος ο Πικάσο». Και σχολιάζει τα πάντα: βλέπει αγώνα κατς και τον τοποθετεί σε τσίρκο, σχεδιάζει ηθοποιούς ως «ρεμπραντικές φιγούρες», αναφέρεται στο θάνατο του Ρόμπερτ Κένεντι. Συχνά ειρωνεύεται τη σύγχρονη ζωγραφική, ιδιαίτερα την αφηρημένη, ενώ δεν παραλείπει τις αναφορές στον εαυτό του. Η τελευταία πινελιά της «Suite 347» μπαίνει στις 5 Οκτωβρίου 1968. Πάντα προληπτικός, τελειώνει με έναν κρυφό αριθμό: 3+4=7.
Ιδιαίτερα σημαντική για την έκθεση είναι η αξιοποίηση του Αρχείου Σπητέρη που διαθέτει το Τελλόγλειο. «Βρήκαμε ένα πολύτιμο υλικό για τον τρόπο υποδοχής της “Suite 347” από τον τύπο της εποχής στη Γαλλία», λέει η κ. Βουτυρά.

Ετσι, σε ειδικά διαμορφωμένες βιτρίνες, βρίσκει κανείς αποκόμματα εφημερίδων και περιοδικών με συνεντεύξεις του Πικάσο και αφιερώματα σε αυτόν, καθώς και φωτογραφίες του με τον Κοκτό, αλλά και την… Μπριζίτ Μπαρντό.



Η «Suite 347» εγκαινιάστηκε την Παρασκευή από το γ. γ. του υπουργείου Μακεδονίας-Θράκης κ. Λουκά Ανανίκα. Μεγάλος χορηγός της έκθεσης είναι η COSMOTE.
