The 48th Thessaloniki International Film Festival will take place November 16 to 25 2007.

As the major film event in Greece and the greater Southeastern European region, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival hosts an eclectic selection of approximately 280 films from international independent filmmakers.

Our program consists of an international competition for first and second features, sidebar sections focusing on the best of world cinema such as Independence Days, Balkan Survey and Focus and a panorama of the yearly Greek production.

Parallel events, such as art exhibitions and concerts, and industry initiatives have turned the Thessaloniki International Film Festival into a major event on the European film festival circuit.

John Malkovich honored at Thessaloniki Film Festival

Influential Hollywood actor, director and producer John Malkovich took centre stage on Sunday evening in Thessaloniki, where he gave the keynote lecture during a film masterclass on the sidelines of the 48th Thessaloniki Film Festival.

The prolific Malkovich, among others, the indirect 'protagonist' of a surrealistic movie entitled, in fact, "Being John Malkovich", covered questions ranging from the film bearing his name to the state of America's once-abundant independent cinema industry to the so-called "Malkovich acting method", for which he said there is no "Malkovich method."

The Academy Award-nominated actor, the official guest of this year's festival, was scheduled to attend the "Golden Alexander" awards ceremony on Sunday evening at the Olympion Theatre, followed by a screening of Spike Jonze' "Being John Malkovich".

Greek-American writer and journalist Nicholas Gage, the author of "Eleni", a book later turned into a motion picture staring Malkovich, was also in attendance at the masterclass.

Στο μυαλό του... Ουίλιαμ Φόκνερ επιχείρησε να μπει ο διάσημος ηθοποιός και παραγωγός Τζον Μάλκοβιτς, όταν ρωτήθηκε για τη «συνταγή» των καλών ταινιών

Ο Τζον Μάλκοβιτς επικαλέστηκε τον Αμερικανό Νομπελίστα συγγραφέα (βραβείο Νόμπελ λογοτεχνίας του 1949) και την ομιλία του στην παραλαβή του βραβείου, σύμφωνα με τον οποίο η «συνταγή είναι γράφουμε και να λέμε ιστορίες με... παλιές αδιαμφισβήτητες αλήθειες. Να μιλάμε για την αγάπη, την τιμή, τη συμπόνια και τη θυσία. Ίσως πρέπει να τα ξαναδιδαχθούμε όλα αυτά. Μέχρι τότε όμως, μέχρις ότου τα κατανοήσουμε, θα υπάρχει σ΄ όλους μας η κατάρα των σύγχρονων προβλημάτων. Είτε αυτά είναι η ατομική βόμβα - όπως στον καιρό του Φόκνερ - είτε οι νέες τεχνολογίες και ιδεολογίες του σήμερα», δήλωσε χαρακτηριστικά απαντώντας σε σχετική ερώτηση που του έγινε στη διάρκεια του μάστερ - κλας (masterclass) που διοργάνωσε το Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης, με την ευκαιρία της παρουσίας του στην Πόλη.

Όσο για την περιβόητη ταινία (Being Malkovits), o ίδιος δήλωσε πως δεν είναι σίγουρος ότι ήταν γι' αυτόν μια φιλοφρόνηση. «Ίσως θα ένοιωθα καλύτερα αν τη σκηνοθετούσα. Δεν χρειαζόμουν απαραίτητα εγώ. Θα μπορούσε κι άλλος ηθοποιός να παίξει το ρόλο» .

Σε ερωτήσεις για το μέλλον του κινηματογράφου ο Μάλκοβιτς δήλωσε πως «είναι δύσκολοι καιροί για τον κινηματογράφο, το μέλλον του οποίου είναι ασαφές. Η έλευση των νέων μέσων δημιούργησε προβλήματα. Πριν 30 χρόνια, όσοι ενδιαφερόταν για μια ταινία, θα πήγαιναν να τη δουν στον κινηματογράφο . Σήμερα, μπορεί να περιμένει να τη δει μετά από δέκα χρόνια. Η πρώτη μου ταινία δεν κυκλοφόρησε καν στις ΗΠΑ» .

Όσο για τον λεγόμενο ανεξάρτητο αμερικανικό κινηματογράφο, υποστήριξε πως εδώ και πέντε περίπου χρόνια έχει πάψει να υπάρχει ως «ανεξάρτητος», καθώς οι μεγάλες εταιρείες έχουν δημιουργήσει ειδικά γραφεία προώθησης των ανεξάρτητων ταινιών.

Ο Τζον Μάλκοβιτς- επίσημος προσκεκλημένος του 48ου φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης θα παραστεί απόψε στο «Ολύμπιον», όπου θα του απονεμηθεί ο Χρυσός Αλέξανδρος, ενώ στη συνέχεια θα προβληθεί προς τιμή του η πολυβραβευμένη ταινία του Σπαικ Τζόνσον, με τίτλο «Στο μυαλό του Τζον Μάλκοβιτς» .

Man with ‘no fear of failure’ takes Golden Alexander

THESSALONIKI – There are some voices you never fail to recognize. One of them belongs to John Malkovich, that formidable actor of marvelous transformations who proves that you can’t find the stuff that makes a real performance in any costume or prop. “I don’t think even John can tell you how he does it,” said producer Russell Smith of Malkovich’s versatility and ability to so profoundly embody a role.

Malkovich and production partner Smith were at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival this weekend, where Malkovich was presented with a Golden Alexander on Sunday night for his body of work and his contribution to cinema.

Partners at the Mr Mudd production company – along with Lianne Halfon – this dynamic duo goes way back. Friends since their late teens, their shared passion for the stage and screen has led to numerous notable projects, the most recent of which is “Juno,” a comedy drama penned by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, set for theater release in early 2008. In his capacity as an actor, Malkovich will be appearing in “Beowulf” – the epic fantasy drama directed by Robert Zemeckis and also featuring Robin Wright Penn and Anthony Hopkins – opening in Greece on Thursday.

While at the TIFF, which runs to next Sunday, Malkovich and Smith gave the public plenty of opportunity to direct questions at them and hear their opinions.

A master class set to begin at 11 a.m. yesterday at the John Cassavetes Theater in the port warehouse complex attracted hundreds of festival-goers – lined up and pushing at the doors from 10 a.m. That was followed up at 2 p.m. by an open press conference at Warehouse C, the festival’s nerve center.

Malkovich and Smith’s collaboration dates back to Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company, of which Malkovich is still a major guiding member and for whom Smith produced 50 plays in a five-year period. Times have changed since then, they both agree. “At Steppenwolf [which he joined fresh out of school in 1976] we just wanted to put on plays. We didn’t think of being famous… That’s much different now and I think that it’s a prodigiously weighty cross to bear. The focus can be on anything other than that which you like to do,” says Malkovich.

Change is not all bad, according to the actor, who also spoke of advances in technology opening new roads of expression. New technologies like YouTube, he says, where anyone with an idea can shoot a video that will be watched by millions of people around the world, “give a wonderful democracy,” a gateway of expression for people who don’t have the means to produce a movie in the conventional manner.

Malkovich is often – incorrectly – identified with playing the bad guy. Of the 70-odd roles in which he has appeared on screen, he portrays a villain in just a handful, and anyway, “I don’t like to look at characters that way,” he said. Smith also added that actors often become typecast because studios demand that they repeat successful roles.

On the subject of roles, Nicholas Gage – the acclaimed author of the autobiographical “Eleni,” which was made into a movie in 1985 starring Malkovich in the role of the author – who was in the audience yesterday morning commented on what he called the actor’s “sly sense of humor,” asking him why he hasn’t played many comic roles, “maybe like Cary Grant in the 1930s,” he said. “They haven’t been suggested to me,” answered Malkovich, who then went on to remember how Stephen Frears made him watch Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious” time and time again so he could capture something of the role for “Mary Reilly.” “Stephen would come in and say, ‘So, have you watched it?’ ‘Yes,’ I’d say, ‘It’s right there, in the machine.’ ‘Well?’ Stephen would say. ‘But that’s Cary Grant!’”

Another member of the audience asked him is he’s ever experienced a complete mental block on stage or frozen in a film. “I have no pronounced fear of failure,” answered Malkovich. “To get scared you have to be afraid of failing. I’ve failed many times and plan to fail for years to come.”

On a different question regarding the course of modern-day cinema, both Smith and Malkovich agreed that it can be hard to find interesting screenplays. Smith also added that the predominance of the studio system has crushed independent filmmaking. “The future of this business is unknown,” he said. “American independent film,” he added on the same subject at the press conference later, “has completely evolved into a small portion of the studio system. Every studio has an independent section.” Independent filmmakers, he continued, “have come to mean people that raise money from rich relatives.”On the subject of finding material and writing, Malkovich quoted William Faulkner from his 1950 speech accepting the Nobel Prize for Literature in Stockholm: “The young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat. He must learn them again. He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heart, the old universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed – love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice.

“Until he does so, he labors under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust, of defeats in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or compassion. His griefs grieve on no universal bones, leaving no scars. He writes not of the heart but of the glands.”

China’s Cai Shangjun receives the Golden Alexander for ‘Red Awn’ at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival yesterday. ‘PVC-1,’ by Colombian-Greek Spyros Stathopoulos, won second prize. Estonian Veiko Ounpuu was named best director for ‘Autumn Ball.’



Στο «Ώριμο Στάχυ» ο Χρυσός Αλέξανδρος του Φεστιβάλ Θεσ/νίκης

Η ταινία του Κινέζου σκηνοθέτη Τσάι Σανκτζούν με τίτλο «Ωριμο στάχυ» είναι η κάτοχος του μεγάλου βραβείου (Χρυσός Αλέξανδρος) στο διεθνές διαγωνιστικό τμήμα 48ο Φεστιβαλ κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης που ολοκληρώθηκε απόψε. Το Βραβείο Καλύτερης μεγάλου μήκους ταινίας συνοδεύεται από χρηματικό ποσό 37.000 ευρώ.

Τον Αργυρό Αλέξανδρο (22.000 ευρώ) έλαβε η ταινία του 29χρονου Θεσσαλονικιού σκηνοθέτη (ζεί με την οικογένεια του στην Κολομβία) Σπύρου Σταθουλόπουλου με τίτλο «PVC - 1».

Το βραβείο σκηνοθεσίας απονεμήθηκε στον Εσθονό Βέικο Εούνπου για την ταινία του με τίτλο «Φθινοπωρινός κύκλος».

Βαρβείο σεναρίου έλαβαν οι Ελληνες Θάνος Αναστόπουλος και Βασίλης Ραίσης για το σενάριο της ταινίας που σκηνοθέτησε ο πρώτος με τίτλο «Διόρθωση».

Το βραβείο καλύτερης ηθοποιού έλαβε η ελληνίδα Αννα Λαλασίδου για την ερμηνεία της στη γερμανική παραγωγή της ταινίας του Ελληνα σκηνοθέτη Αθανάσιου Καρανικόλα με τίτλο «Ελλη».

Το βραβείο καλύτερου ηθοποιού απονεμήθηκε στον Κολομβιανό Αλμπέρτο Σορνόζα για την ερμηνεία του στην ταινία «PVC - 1» του Σπύρου Σταθουλόπουλου.

Βραβείο Καλλιτεχνικού Επιτεύγματος απονεμήθηκε στον 23χρονο Μεξικανό σκηνοθέτη Χόνας Κουαρόν για τη σκηνοθεσία της ταινίας «Η στιγμή σου».

Μέλη της κριτικής επιτροπής στο διεθνές διαγωνιστικό τμήμα του 48ου φεστιβαλ κινηματογράφου της Θεσσαλονίκης ήταν οι : Γίρι Μέντζελ (Τσέχος σκηνοθέτης - πρόεδρος) Φρέντ Ρούς (Αμερικανός παραγωγός), Λουκρέσια Μάρτελ (Αργεντινή, σκηνοθέτης), Μάικλ Φιτζέραλντ (αμερικανός παραγωγός), Νέ Κάρανφιλ (Ρουμάνος σκηνοθέτης και σεναριογράφος), Γιασμίν Αχμάντ (σκηνοθέτης) και η ελληνίδα ποιήτρια - καθηγήτρια πανεπιστημίου Ολγα Μπρούμα.

- Η πενταμελής Κριτική Επιτροπή της Διεθνούς Ομοσπονδίας των Κριτικών Κινηματογράφου (FIPRESCI) απένειμε βραβείο στην ταινία «PVC - 1» του Σπύρου Σταθουλόπουλου για το επίσημο Διαγωνιστικό Τμήμα, και στην ταινία «Επιστροφή» του Βασίλη Δούβλη για το ελληνικό τμήμα.

-Το βραβείο «Καθημερινότητα: Υπέρβαση ή Συμφιλίωση» του Υπουργείου Μακεδονίας-Θράκης (συνοδεύεται από το χρηματικό έπαθλο των 15.000 ευρώ ) απονεμήθηκε στην ταινία «ΕΛΛΗ» του Αθανάσιου Καρανικόλα ( Γερμανία)

- Το βραβείο «Γυναίκα και Ισότητα Ευκαιριών» της Γενικής Γραμματείας Ισότητας του Υπουργείου Εσωτερικών (συνοδεύεται από χρηματικό έπαθλο των 5.500 ευρώ ) στην Ιρανογαλλική παραγωγή με τίτλο «Ο Βούδας λιποθύμησε από ντροπή» της Χάνα Μαχμαλμπάφ.

-Το βραβείο «Ανθρώπινες αξίες» της Βουλής των Ελλήνων, που συνοδεύεται από το χρηματικό έπαθλο των 15.000 ευρώ, απονεμήθηκε στην ταινία «Κόλπα» του Πολωνού Αντρέι Γιακιμόφσκι.

-Το βραβείο της Nokia που συνοδεύεται από το χρηματικό έπαθλο των 10.000 ευρώ απονέμεται στην παραγωγή με τίτλο «Ο αστυνομικός» του Ναβάν Λαπέν (Ισραήλ) πρότζεκτ του Crossroads.

-Η ΠΕΚΚ (Πανελλήνια Ενωση Κριτικών Κινηματογράφου) απένειμε το βραβείο της στην ταινία «Η μεταμόρφωση» του Κώστα Σφήκα (Ελλάδα).

- Ειδικό βραβείο τεχνικής αρτιότητας ΕΤΕΚΤ (Ένωση Τεχνικών Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου Τηλεόρασης ) για ελληνική παραγωγή απονεμήθηκε στην ταινία «ΕL GREGO» του Γιάννη Σμαραγδή (Ελλάδα).

-Το βραβείο Κοινού FISCHER του τμήματος Ματιές στα Βαλκάνια του 48ου Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης, που συνοδεύεται από το χρηματικό έπαθλο των 2.000 ευρώ, απονεμήθηκε στην ταινία «Η διεθνής» των Τούρκων σκηνοθετών Σίρι Σιρεγιά Εντέρ και Μουχαρέμ Γκιλμέζ.

-Το βραβείο Κοινού FISCHER του τμήματος DigitalWave του 48ου Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης, που συνοδεύεται από το χρηματικό έπαθλο των 2.000 ευρώ, απονέμεται στην ταινία «Γιακονάν: Οι σκοτεινές μέρες του χαμού» του Γιάγκου Ραυτόπουλου ( Ελλάδα)

-Το βραβείο Κοινού FISCHER του Διεθνούς Διαγωνιστικού τμήματος του 48ου Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης (συνοδεύεται απο χρηματικό έπαθλο 3.000 ευρώ) δόθηκε στην ταινία «PVC-1» του Σπύρου Σταθουλόπουλου και το αντίστοιχο του Ελληνικού Προγράμματος (επίσης 3.000 ευρώ) στην ταινία «EL GRECO» του Γιάννη Σμαραγδή.

Η τελετή λήξης του διεθνούς διαγωνιστικού τμήματος του φεστιβάλ και απονομής των βραβείων πραγματοποιήθηκε απόψε στον κινηματογράφο «Ολύμπιον» παρουσία του υπουργού Πολιτισμού κ.Μιχάλη Λιάπη. Της τελετής απονομής ακολούθησε η προβολή της αμερικανικής ταινίας (εκτός συναγωνισμού) με τίτλο «Τhe Darjeeling limited» του Ουές Αντερσον.

Αύριο (Δευτέρα) το βράδυ στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Θεσσαλονίκης θα πραγματοποιηθεί η επίσημη τελετή απονομής των κρατικών κινηματογραφικών βραβείων ποιότητας παρουσία και του υπουργού Πολιτισμού κ. Μιχάλη Λιάπη.
