The US Senate approved the nomination of Philip Reeker for new Ambassador to FYROM, BTA new agency reported referring to AP. Reekers appointment was temporarily delayed due to the claims of the Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez and Republican Olympia Snowe that he represented "pro-Macedonian positions." Philip Reeker will replace the current US Ambassador to FYROM Gillian Milovanovic. Panama did not changed its decision to recognize the FYROMunder its constitutional name, and same as before, it will use this name in bilateral communication, Dnevnik daily said. Panama's Foreign Minister Samuel Lewis Navarro personally notified his FYROMcounterpart Antonio Milososki about Panama's official position. In telephone conversation, Navarro told Milososki that the decision dating from 2002 is a valid decision and verified in the United Nations. He added that Greek media recently misinterpreted the statement by Panama's ambassador in Athens. Greek media claimed that Panama's authorities decided to call Macedonia by "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (FYROM) in bilateral and international communication. | Recognition of FYROM Church - part of talks with Greece The recognition of FYROM Orthodox Church (MOC) to be a part of the talks with Greece about the name issue, FYROMPrime Minister Nikola Gruevski requested on Monday from UN mediator Matthew Nimetz. This, as reported by electronic media, is stated in the latest letter from Prime Minister Gruevski to the mediator. "Considering that many issues are discussed, we request this issue also be put on the agenda", is stated in the letter. The message that the FYROM Church will be recognized in the Orthodox world only if it changes its name clearly points out that the problem is not canonical, but entirely political, connected with the constitutional name of FYROM, and motivated by Greek denying of FYROMidentity, the letter states. According to Prime Minister Gruevski, the problem of MOC lies basically in the dispute that Greece imposed, pertaining to FYROMs constitutional name. In the new letter, the Prime Minister request building good neighborly relations, emphasizing that Greece, lately, compared with other countries in the region, increases its military potential out of proportion. /end/ Code: http://www.makfax.com.mk/look/novina/article.tpl?IdLanguage=1&IdPublication=2&NrArticle=121308&NrIssue=735&NrSection=10 Last edited by euro; 08-11-2008 at 06:28 PM. |

| Nimetz: The name issue is the essence of the problem Skopje /13/08/ 19:28 The name issue is the essence of the problem and that's what we need to focus on, said UN mediator Matthew Nimetz on Wednesday in New York after meeting with FYROMacedonian negotiating team. According to the mediator, difficult and concrete talks were led on new ideas, but also with variations of old ideas which have been discussed previously, the electronic media reported. "There are many issues between the two countries. Some of them are long-term, some are short-term issues. I think that both countries agree that the core issue is the name. There is a UN resolution and an agreement between the two countries and my mandate is on the name issue", Nimetz said. He pointed out that all issues between the two countries are complicated, although the name is the most difficult one. "My feeling is that the relations are complicated. The church issue was always complicated. I always believed that the name issue is solvable and that if we reach an agreement on the name, it will open the way to solving many other issues", Nimetz said. According to announcements, the mediator will have a separate meeting in New York later Wednesday with the Greek negotiator Adamantios Vassilakis, and will come to Skopje next week upon the invitation of the FYROM Government. | Greek military exercises not a threat For more than a month the Greek Army had set up military exercises right next to the FYROM border, in the Lerin region. The FYROM Minister of Defense says there is no military threat from the Greek Army, however confirms their Army maneuvers are to exert pressure on the name negotiations. We dont have enough information to consider the maneuvers of the Greek Army as a military threat to FYROM. This is a way for them to show force and exert pressure regarding the current negotiations in New York, says Zoran Konjanovski, MoD. The Army has international political functionality, which means apart from politics it is always good to showcase the military sector says Trajan Gocevski, former MoD. The Greek Army has about 240,000 soldiers. Its not a professional Army, rather it is still mandatory for all citizens, hence the number of soldiers. 18 months military service for the Army, and 24 months for Navy and Air Force. According to General Risto Damjanovski, Greece frequently does military exercises because of its large army in their attempt to match the Turkish Army. There is no alarm, however experts say if Greece does not pull its army from the FYROM border, OESC and NATO should be notified. You must be a bigger fool than MINA for reposting their crap Euro. Greece wishes it had an army of 240k soldiers. It stands at less than half of than (under 110k). The total manpower of Greece's armed forces is about 70k less than that figure for Pete's sake! And military service has been reduced to 12months for all branches for a few years now - it was 18 months for the Army back in my days... And the reason for conducting exercises near Florina is that for decades now there has been an exercise ground between the villages of Λόφοι (Lofi), Κέλλη (Kelli), Βεύη (Vevi) and Μελίτη (Meliti) and the summer is standard time for exercises. And both NATO and the OSCE (can't even spell that properly the idiots) have no authority to interfere with a country's military exercises - had Greece been amassing troops in what could only been interpreted as preparation for an invasion, then they would take an interest. Anyone that's actually served knows the difference between the two in terms of the support equipment needed to be mobilized. All of the above are things that (a) a responsible journalist should have been able to find out (b) any person in a position of influence or power should have been aware of (or at least be suspicious enough reading the crap you reposted to inquire and find out). But MINA is a journalistic outfit only in its own wet dreams. It repeated the WMC's assertion that Greece was planning to invade its northern neighbour in the early '90s based on similar falsities and misrepresentations and never checked to see if any of these assertions were valid. Actually I was happy to read that piece of comedy, it showed the depths of self-delusion the neo-kommitatzi brain is capable of and made me break into laughter trying to imagine the A Army Corps invading anyone. That the 240k figure has so far being repeated in interviews by both that nationalist fool you call your national movie director as well as by Milososki himself speaks volumes about the ability of neo-kommitatzis to separate fact from the fiction they wish represented reality. For example Gruevski complaining about Greece's military "buildup" when in fact from 2004 until recently the pace of buying new equipment had almost ground to a standstill allowing the Turks to get ahead. I could attribute it to some nasty side-effects from his boxing days but then again one has to look into the latest barrage of letters from Milososki and Gruevski to realise that for some obscure reason they appear to think that Greece is bound by international agreements it has either not signed or signed but never ratified... So it appears that delusions are truly part of their world view. Keep it up paliatso. |
