Ethnos: U.S. threatens Greece with repressive measures if it vetoes Skopje membership in NATO

Athens. The U.S. threatens Greece with repressive measures if it vetoes Skopje’s NATO membership, the Greek Ethnos newspaper writes in an article titled “U.S. (behind-the-scene) threats to Greece”.
The article claims that a U.S. senior official has responded to Athens’s extreme position expressed by Greek diplomats by saying that Greece should be ready for repressive measures.
It is expected that the Greek stance on the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will be voiced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyannis when she meets with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington.

Eleftheros Typos: Greece gets slap in the face over Skopje

The United States and Germany pledged support to Macedonia's NATO membership bid and ignored Greece, Eleftheros Typos daily said.

The paper says Washington's diplomatic moves openly oppose the eventual Greek veto on Macedonia's entry into NATO, dragging in several European countries, including Germany.

The participants of international security conference in Munich spelled out their support to Skopje's efforts to join the Alliance, Eleftheros Typos daily said.

The paper quotes the US Defense Secretary Robert Gates as saying that Macedonia, Albania and Croatia should become members of NATO for the sake of stability in the region.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier came up with a similar rhetoric. He conveyed his country's position that in spite the name issue, put forward by one member-state, all three countries in the Adriatic Group should be invited to join NATO.

Surrounded by such an atmosphere, Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski said "Facing the dilemma - membership or name - Macedonia has chosen the name," the newspaper says, adding that Crvenkovski blamed Athens of breaching the solidarity principle with threats to impose veto because of "bilateral rift".

Greek state television said on Monday that Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki will meet with the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on 13 February in Washington. Secretary Rice will meet with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis the following day. Green national broadcaster said the UN mediator Matthew Nimetz is expected to come up with a new proposal by the end of February. /end/
