When it changed exactly I really can't say... but I think I read somewhere that it was first recorded in Byzantine texts around 560AD. and later (I think it was during the 9th. cent) in medieval Latin texts from which it passed onto French... the only word that comes to mind is "ΔΟΥΛΟΣ"...
