''Her name, Cassandra, has two distinct meanings. Robert Graves translates it from Greek to mean "she who entangles men", which is ironic since, although she was stunningly beautiful, her 'madness' repelled most men and her prophesies foretold their ignorant deaths. Today, we call a "cassandra" someone whose true words are ignored, since Cassandra's doom was to predict what others refused to believe. (Graves p747, Powell p325) KASSANDROS m Greek Mythology (CASSANDER Latinized) Pronounced: ka-SAN-dros Possibly means ‘shining upon man’, derived from Greek kekasmai ‘to shine’ and aner ‘man’ (genitive andros). In Greek myth Cassandra was a Trojan princess, the daughter of Priam and Hecuba. She was given the gift of prophecy by Apollo, but when she spurned his advances he cursed her so nobody would believe her prophecies. The name of a king of Macedon.'' I would like to ask which is the equivalent verb in the modern Greek of the words that Cassander has its etymologies. Also,if it is possible for someone to give me the etymology of Aspetos,a name that was given to Achilles from the Epirots Last edited by Teukros; 09-09-2007 at 07:40 AM. |

"XENOPHON" = he who slaughters foreighners "PERSEPHONE" = she that was slaughtered from Perseus , name that originaly was refering to Medussa , but in time characterized Demeter's daughter. In the same way DIONYSOPHON = he who killed Dionysus . Don't forget that in Greek Mythology Dionysus was merdered from the Titans.

| LANASSA (ΛΑΝΑΣΣΑ) A female name appearing in recent Macedonian inscriptions (AEK 353, Chalkidiki) . In mythology, Lanassa was the daughter Kleodeus, grandchild of Herakles. Historically, Lanassa was the wife of Neoptolemaeos, the Molossian King who together gave birth to Pyrrhus. The name is a distortion of LEONASSA (ΛΕΩΝ-ΑΣΣΑ). In some sources she gives also birth to 5 more children named Argos, Pergamos, Pandaros, Dorieas and Eurilochos. The name appears also in Locris and Phocis (IG IX, 1, 624, IG IX1, 200).
