| Words with Northern Greek phonetic form It is significant that many Greek words of the Slavic dialect of Skopje, are characterized by the northern Greek phonetic type as the change of unaccented 0 into U and of the unaccented e in i as also -less frequently- the rejection of the unaccented I. 1. The change of the unaccented o into u. Anustu, enurija, flurin, zugraf, kaluger, kukona, mirudija, pirustija, ulera, uhtar, dukimasam, zugrafisam, skulasam, umjasam. The verbal ending -suvam (vapsuvam, zilepsuvam, kinisuvam, mitosuvam, timisuvam etc.) from the northern-Greek ending of the future tense -sou instead of -so. 2. The change of the unaccented e into i. Ilinika, kiramida, latipsa, milan, pro (g) ima, proksinit, ririf', sindilija, skilida, tsirimonia, ikisitaksam. 3. Rejection of the unaccented I- Kofnid. Historical conclusions from the impact of Greek on the Slavic Language. The considerable number of words which came into Balkan Slavic from Greek, through direct ethnological contact, a narrow sample of which has been given above, is of major interest to the student ofthe national origins of our northern neighbours. For in addition to historical evidence in regard to the Slavic expansion in Greek temtories, the Greek linguistic influence shows conclusively that when the Slavs began to invade the Balkan peninsula, they found it inhabited by a people who spoke only Greek, and not, as Slav historians maintain, Thracio-Illyrian. If the opposite were true, the Balkan Slav dialects would have been full not of Greek, but of Thracio-Illyrian words, which the Thracio-Illyrians, undergoing a gradual process of Slavisation, would have carried along, through the stage of bilingualism which is common in such cases, to their new language. But where are those Thracio-Illyrian words? Qste simply, they do not exist. Apart from the Latin language, the mother of contemporary Vlach which is spoken in some areas, and Albanian which is common in the north-western parts of the peninsula, the Slavs did not meet in the Balkans any other language but Greek. Thracio-Illyrian had disappeared a long time before their arrival, during the Hellenistic and the Roman eras. Only the Vissoi, a small Thracian tribe in the Rhodopi region, retained their Thracian language down to the 7th century A.D. It was hellenised however, before the Slavs could come into contact with it. source Andriotis_The Federative Republic Of Skopje And Its Language Last edited by akritas; 07-15-2007 at 05:25 AM. |

And yet they'll tell you "the greeks stole these words from us"... But they will not reply when you bring them the greek etymology... Because these words do not have an etymology in their language...

They will insist it comes from the... "macedonian" word shkup which means "greatness of city" (or something) and it was actually Alexander who built it...

Only in the Byzantium period was rebuilted (as i said before for viewpoint) and all though the official name was Iounstiniani (from Iounstinianos, the emperor who rebuilt it) everypody use to call it Skopia! But even if they used to call it Skopia from the Skoupoi it's still ancient GREEK name! ΣΚΟΥΠΟΙ (ΣΚΟΠΙΑ). [Πτολεμ. Γεωγρ. Τόμ. Α', σελ, 455.] Last edited by terastios; 07-15-2007 at 11:56 AM. |

There is significant Greek influence in the cultural characteristics of FYROMian Slavs, that to a slightly smaller level in Bulgaria proper.Serbia is transitional between Greek, mostly cultural and Latin which exercised both cultural and somatic, influence. As far as I know, except very sporadically in linguistic studies, nobody in Skopje took a synthetic approach in evaluating Greek contribution to FYROMian culture or answering the question about post-settlement presence of Greeks in FYROMian territory, their origin and ethnological contribution.
