The Jireček Line is an imaginary line that divided in the ancient Balkans, until the 4th century, the influences of the Latin (in North) and Greek (in South) languages.

It goes from near the city of Laçi in current Albania to Serdica (now Sofia, in Bulgaria) and then following the Balkan Mountains to the Black Sea.

The placing of the line is based on archaeological findings: most of the inscriptions found to the north of it were written in Latin, while most of the inscriptions found to the south were in Greek.

This line is important in the establishing of the place where the Romanian and Aromanian people were formed (see Origin of Romanians), since it is considered unlikely that a Latin people formed on the south of it.

It was originally used by the Czech historian Konstantin Jireček in 1911 in a history of the Slavic people
One more fact that the Slavic is not appeared before 6cent A.D.

How much influence has Latin had on the Slavic tongues? How much has Greek? This is a real interesting topic. Perhaps the Greeks were to concerned about the wealth and more developed cultures of Asia and North Africa as opposed to most of the rest of Europe? Many questions to be answered. Thanks for the information.

I opened this thread because as you know the FYROM Slavs focus in the last 5 years in the new propaganda that is relative with the known
Paleothilic Conituity Theory.

Clearly all the supporters of this theory said that Lower Macedonia was under the Greek influnce. And one of them is the language that expresed from the Chech historician 100 years before.
Unfortunly the Greek histiriograpgy has forget this issue, and I except from the Greeks in diaspora that have more easy access in the English bibliography to help us more.
