ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek authorities say subway construction work in the northern city of Thessaloniki has unearthed an ancient grave with a wealth of golden jewelry.

The 2,300-year old grave contained a female skeleton, accompanied by four gold wreaths and gold earrings in the shape of dogs' heads set with semiprecious stones.

A Culture Ministry statement said Friday that the grave goods included a bronze mirror, a bronze vase and six clay pots.

The woman had been buried in a wooden coffin, traces of which survived. The ministry said part of the grave had been destroyed by a modern sewage pipe.

The Thessaloniki subway is scheduled for completion in 2012.

It always surprises me how anything gets built in Greece. Everywhere you dig you find an antiquity. What a civilization we had!

This reminds me a story about a Macedonian peasant who was asked by a forreign traveller in early 20th century whether himself and the land where he resided were Greek.His answer was: Dig everywhere you want and you'll find a lot of ancient things.If these aren't Greek,then neither me nor this land are Greek.
