What is the deal with place...its eesm to be infected by Russians Serbs Bulgarians Romanian monks...all the looneys inone area..all we need now is an earthqueake to brake of sail off.....

Never really heard the animal one.. but the whole idea is that since Christ dedicated the peninsula (not an island) to Her, no other woman is fit to set foot on it.. it also helps the monks keep their oaths and avoid temptations.
Then again this could be considered nothing more than ancient Hellenic influence upon Christianity since there are more than a few accounts of women being forbidden from entering specific temples.

Quote:
Strabo 14.5.3:

δ' ἀκρώρεια καλεῖται Ὄλυμπος, ἔχουσα Ἀφροδίτης Ἀκραίας ναόν, ἄδυτον γυναιξὶ καὶ ἀόρατον

The mountain peak is called Olympus; and it has a temple of Aphrodite Acraea, which cannot be entered nor seen by women.
"ἄδυτον" kinda sounds familiar doesn't it..

I really don't get that 'infected' crack.. what does anyone's ethnic background have to do with their decision to follow a specific religion which some may or may not agree with ?

As for homos while I have no idea where you may have found that one and even if it was true, homos are genetically men and since no 'κολοβυθομετρησεις' take place, its kinda hard to point the finger at who is unless he'll be waving some LGBT flag that would give him away..

But their visit could be perceived as them reaching for guidance, maybe some hopes of getting them on the 'righteous path' but then again, the very fact that the issue was brought up in the EU Parliament (I think it was in 2001) and nothing was actually done about Karamanou's comlpaints despite EU pressure, indicates that its not really true, well not the acceptance part.

Broadening the topic a bit, I never could understand the fuss about Athos.. I don't see Karamanou whinning about women being forbidden to enter the Church's "ιερο" nor about the fact that a little girl is blessed outside it (after she reaches 40days) since she's considered "unholy upon birth" while the boys are allowed to enter and blessed inside it.

Lol Orphic...where have you been re kolotripa?

As for the animals:

In order to reduce sexual temptation, women are completely barred from the peninsula, a fact which has earned a certain amount of fame; even female domestic animals (with the exception, some say, of cats, as well as chickens, which lay eggs that provide the fresh egg yolk needed for the paint used in iconography) are forbidden.

The interdiction is punished by imprisonment from one to two years. The European parliament has urged Greece twice to change this rule, but the demand was rejected.

There is a big difference not being allowed to enter a temple and not being allowed on soil mate due to your sex.... i hope you see the difference right there especialy with the punishment that follows.

And i suppose you think of it as being a good trait to not allow a human being in a place which is considered holy because the ancients use to do it? Or are you juts taking a stab at me with the whole ancient Greek aspect?

Question: Who gave the Athos peninsula to them? What kind of agreement took place and when?

hehehe.. had some pc issues (currently using a loaner [damn slow one]) and a little headache condition due to a minor surgery that was delayed for way too long, but things are on their way..

As I said I never heard the animal thing so really can't comment since I can't even imagine the mentality under which this would be enforced, but I do find the banning of women as understandable under their norms and mentality which is restricted to medieval beliefs.

its a simple fact that Orthodox Christianity has been influenced by the ancients in more ways than one and to be honest, no, I don't see a difference between not even being allowed to see a temple (ἀόρατον) from not being allowed to set foot on an entire penninsula which they considered dedicated to what they perceive as one of their highest values.

As for the "stab".. I'm sure you noticed that unlike your post, I didn't resort to any pft, lol, babble nor even infected comments, which could be perceived by some as disrespect towards another's religious beliefs. Believe me when I say that I have no issue with anyone's religious beliefs so no it wasn't a "stab" and even though I may not understand some choices at times, I fully respect everyone's decision.

Think about the last sentence for a min'
