UND DAS PROBLEM DER SPRACHLICHEN
ZUGEH6RIGKEIT DER TRIBALLER*

Abstract: The paper deals with the comic figure of the god Triballus in Aristophanes' ,,Birds"'. His reply \6\5C nabaisatreu is shown to be in Old-Iranian and to refer to the ..kingdom in the clouds", i.e. the
Cloudcuckootown. Although Iranian character of the Triballi may be
taken into consideration, it seems more probable that Aristophanes
imitates here a place from his ,,Achamians", where, in a similar situation, a sentence in Persian is spoken (verse 100).
Regardless of his
linguistic authenticity, Triballus as a mythological personage ought not to be an Aristophanean creation ex nihilo, for the appareance of such
a barbarian deity corresponds to the very point of the ..Birds", alluding to the deep crisis of the traditional religion, and especially of the eschatological beliefs, which broke out in Athens with the
sacrilegious mutilation of the herms at the time of the Sicilian expedition.

So lebendig und breit auch das wissenschaftliche Interesse der
alten Griechen war, das sie zu den Urhebern fast aller modernen
Wissenschaften machte, so ernst auch der hellenische Geist danach
strebte, ein universales Weltbild zu gewinnen, gab es mindestens
einen Bereich, der von dieser WiBbegier unbetroffen blieb, in dem
,,das griechischeWunder" kaum etwas bewunderns- und erforschungs-
wertes fand - die Fremdphilologie. Fur ..fremdsprachig" sagte man
barbarisch; nicht nur die Idiome wilder Stamme, sondern auch eine
groBe Kultursprache, wie das Altpersische, konnte dadurch dis-
qualifiziert werden. Wenn die Agypter ausnahmsweise von dem Bar-
barennamen verschont blieben, doch gab den gelehrten Griechen die
Hochschatzung, die sie fur die agyptische Zivilisation fuhlten, keinen
AnIaB, sich mit der agyptischen Sprache zu befassen. Nicht daB man
liberhaupt keine fremden Sprachen lernte und kannte; jedoch bedien-
ten sich die Griechen dieser Sprachkentnisse fast ausschlieBlich fur
die praktischen Zwecke: Ein Praktizismus, der in scharfem Gegen-
satz zu ihrer Vorliebe filr die Spekulation und das Theoretisieren in
den Naturwissenschaften steht, die bei uns heute mehr an eine...........

Thx the part i quoted says : "foreign languages they said barbaric even for the idioms of the wild tribes....." ( macedonian for example )
