Russian-Greek relations distinguished for close cooperation, Russian Deputy FM Titov said

06.04.2008, 08.51

ATHENDS, April 6 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian-Greek relations are distinguished for a high level of cooperation in various spheres, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov in an exclusive interview with the leading Greek Katimerini newspaper, featured on Sunday on its electronic site. Titov will visit Athens on April 9-10.

“The Russian-Greek relations have always been built on a rock-firm foundation of confidence and mutual sympathy of our peoples and had been of truly friendly nature,” the deputy minister emphasised. They now continue to develop at a good pace, being filled with a new content and are distinguished for a high level of partnership in various spheres. The sides actively exchange opinions on the entire range of mutual relations during bilateral contacts at various levels.”

According to the diplomat, priorities of the Russian-Greek foreign policy dialogue include a broad range of European and international problems, including the situation on the Balkans, the Kosovo problem, a Cyprus settlement, Russia-EU and Russia-NATO relations, Russian-Greek cooperation in ensuring security and stability in the Mediterranean region as well as cooperation in various international organisations, including the UN, OSCE and the Council of Europe. “We act not just from close positions, but try to convert harmony of approaches into practical deeds,” he underlined.

The U.S, has screwed things up and is losing credibility and clout in the area. Our Orthodox Brothers will pick up the juice.

Government on FYROM issue, possible Moscow visit
Tuesday April 8 , 2008

ATHENS (ANA/MPA)— Government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos on Monday confirmed that Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis had been invited to visit Moscow but said that nothing was yet definite, with arrangements still being discussed through diplomatic channels.

He denied any knowledge of plans to sign an agreement for the construction of a new fuel pipeline between Greece and Russia during the visit.

Replying to questions about the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and possible US involvement in a solution of the name dispute with Greece, the spokesman stressed that Greece’s foreign policy was consistent, stable and used strategies that brought results. He also indicated that Athens wanted the process underway at the United Nations for finding a solution to the name issue to continue.

"We want a solution to the problem. Neither acceleration [of the process] nor a freeze. A solution to the problem within the framework of the UN," he emphasised.

He also rejected suggestions that the prime minister and Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis were sending out mixed messages about what a "geographical qualifier" meant in the framework of the FYROM name dispute.

Greece needs to protect her own national interests above all, regardless of who she must ally with. When seen from that perspective, I believe that a strong alliance with Russia is a more "natural" choice for Greece. Aside from the obvious Orthodox connection, Greek and Russian interests intersect in many areas, economically and strategically as well as historically and culturally. Greece also serves as a "bridge" between Russia and the EU. This is especially important today, as the future of EU/Russian relations is still in its formative stages.

Having said all that, there is no reason why Greek and American relations need to be sour. As a Greek-American, I can tell you that most Americans love Greeks and their culture. Americans are good people but they tend to be simple-minded and easily mislead. To paraphrase filmmaker Michael Moore, when Americans have the right facts they can be trusted to do the right thing. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the average American to get the right facts. I place the blame for this directly on the American media.

For what its worth, here is an excerpt from an interview of American historian Victor Davis Hanson conducted by Davlos magazine:

"Allow me to express my sincere hope that we Greeks and Americans renew and reinvigorate our historic friendship through our common heritage and our common struggles during the last century against German Fascism and Soviet Communism. We were both on the same side in those conflicts. In spite of the errors and misunderstandings that characterized our relationship during the decades of the 60s and 70s, I pray that we will renew our former close ties of friendship, and that during these challenging times we will rediscover that we are essentially "one people." We are the same. It is the responsibility of every true "Hellene" -- here in America or in Hellas -- to do all that his talents and position allow, to encourage a new era of mutual good will based upon our timeless, eons-old, common heritage. I have dedicated a significant part of my life to the teaching of young Americans -- who are all too often naïve and inexperienced -- about their Western heritage, and to dispelling some of the unhistorical distortions pertaining to the history of Greece, both ancient and modern, that are purposely being disseminated today. I sincerely hope that our Greek friends will participate in this undertaking."
