March 18 1821
-After a conference held in the monastery of the Agia Lavra under the presidency of the Bishop Germanos of Patras, the war-lords and notables there present take an oath and declare the beginning of the Greek Revolution.


The oath in Agia Lavra,Theodoros Vryzakis.

-Greek fighters under Sotiris Charalambis and the Petmezas family attack the troops of Arnavutoglu, the Turkish commander of Kalavryta, in the region of Paliopyrgos.This is the first Revolutionary action in Southern Greece.

March 18 1844
King Othon is put under oath of faith to the Constitution.On the same day the government votes an election law according to which all persons have the right to vote.Women and those with no mobile or immobile property are excluded.

March 18 1863
The second Greek National Assemby acclaims George A as the constitutional King of the Greeks.

After the adverse turn of Allied operations in southern Russia, an operation is carried out to save the Greek population of Odessa by providing it with steamship transportation to the Greek ports.

The founding decree of the Academy of Athens, the creation of which is owed to an initiative of the astronomy professor Dimitrios Eginitis, is published in the "Newspaper of the Government".

The entire north-western part of Asia Minor comes under Latin domination after the defeat of the Byzantines in Adramyttium. Only the cities of Nicaea and Prousa remain after the rule of the Despot Theodoros Lascaris.

The decision is taken to evacuate Odessa and to withdraw towards Bessarabia. This is accomplished by March 29. Units of Greek Division II assume the task to organize defensively the entire line.

The power attack by the Italian 31st Infantry Regiment of the Siena Division against Hill 731 in Trebeshine mountain in Northern Epirus, is repulsed by elements of the Hellenic Army’s Division I, with heavy enemy casualties.

19 March 1964
At the first voting for the election of the President of the Parliament ( for this rank Georgios Papandreou had proposed G. Athanasiadis-Novas ) 33 deputies of the Centre Union party denied their vote to the candidate of their party. The Prime Minister declared "Εγίναμεν χλεύη των ηττημένων" - "We have become the scorn of the defeated" and proceeded to the deletion of I. Tsirimokos and S. Papapolitis.

"Vradyni" publisher, Tzortzis Athanasiadis is murdered in his office by left-wing radicals.

20 March 1807
The Russian admiral Senyavin, who is based in the Aegean, joins with Greek ships in attacking Tenedos and forcing the surrender of the Turkish garrison in the fortress of the island.

Colonel Baleste, French Philhellene of Corsican origin, lands in Loutro in Sphakia at the head of a unit of many Philhellenes with the goal of organizing and supporting the Cretan struggle.

20 March 1833
About 7.000 unarmed Cretans from the village of Mournies in Chania assemble and prepare a petition by which they ask for political autonomy. Mustafa Pasha, the military commander of Crete, sends cavalry (at the sufferance of the Great Powers) which disperses the crowd arresting fifty individuals, who will later be hanged.

20 March 1941
Mussolini admits defeat in Albania at a conference of Italian military leaders and presents a document of historical importance. Therein he accepts the failure of the "Primavera (= Spring) Offensive" of March 9-16, and puts the blame on the military officers and the state of the army.

20 March 1947
Yannis Zevgos, surrogate member of Political Office of the Central Committee of KKE, member of the international committee of research of UN for the Greek Civil war, is assassinated in Thessaloniki by an agent of Yugoslavian secret services from Bulkes camp.

According to legend Bishop Palaion Patron Germanos hoisted the 'Sacred Banner' at the monastery of Agia Lavra, that marked the beginning of the War of Independence. The successful siege of Kalavryta follows with the surrender of the Ottoman garrison .

Petrobey Mauromixalis and 2000 Maniates capture Kalamata and he forms the Messinian Senate. In an attempt to gain support, Mauromixalis sends letters to all Christian countries asking for help.

21 March 1827
A Greek cavalry force under the command of Karaiskakis clashes with Kutachi’s forces near the Daphni monastery in Attica. The battle is inconclusive though costly for both sides.

23 March 1821
The city of Kalamata is being liberated from Ottoman rule.The Greeks are guided by Theodoros Kolokotronis,Papaflessas and Petros Mavromichalis.

23 March 1904
The "Chemical Laboratory of Ministry of Economics" that will later be renamed in "General Chemical laboratory of State" is founded .

23 March 1943
The archbishop of Athens Damaskinos and the chairmen of many professional organisations remonstrate with Prime Minister Konstantinos Logothetopoulos "in favour of the protection of Israelites of Greece".
