![]() U.N. envoy says Greece, Macedonia still not ready for direct talks on name dispute The Associated Press Thursday, June 26, 2008 ATHENS, Greece: A UN envoy says Greece and Macedonia are still not ready for high-level talks on a name dispute. Matthew Nimetz says he will continue meetings with foreign ministry negotiators from the two countries. Greece argues Macedonia's name implies a territorial claim against its own region of Macedonia a claim the country of Macedonia rejects. Earlier this year, Athens blocked Macedonia's bid to join NATO because the dispute remained unresolved. Proposals to resolve the impasse have included changing Macedonia's name to New Macedonia or Upper Macedonia. Nimetz met with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis in Athens on Thursday, and was due to travel on to Macedonia.

![]() UN envoy holds talks on former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia name issue 26 June 2008 The United Nations envoy tasked with mediating the long-running dispute between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia over the name of the latter country has held consultations today in Athens with senior Greek officials. Matthew Nimetz, the Secretary-Generals Personal Envoy, said he had a good meeting with Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and other senior officials. While no specific new proposals were submitted, the outline for a solution was discussed. Mr. Nimetz is scheduled to be in Skopje tomorrow for meetings with President Branko Crvenkoski, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and other officials from the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Mr. Nimetz has frequently held talks with the two sides in recent months including a round earlier this month in New York to try to reach a deal, but he said in March that there has been no progress on the issue, despite an acknowledgement by both sides that a solution was in their best interests. The Interim Accord of 13 September 1995, which was brokered by the UN, details the difference between Athens and Skopje on the name issue. It obliges the two sides to continue negotiations under the Secretary-Generals auspices in a bid to reach agreement. http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.as...acedonia&Cr1=#

![]() ONLY if the language and nationality is also called novamacedonian... Let me also propose: All name proposals on this site, whether from our side or the Skopian side, should be accompanied by proposed names for the language and ethnicity, as they are also part of the negotiations

If any media in Skopje start programs on a historic perspectives of WWI WWII and the fall of the Ottomans, the formation of Yugoslavia, Slavic origins and that sort of "Educational" programs, then we'll know that the government is prepping the population for change. Look for TV programs of archaeological findings that predate Slavic times. If anyone can understand Bulgarian listen to Skopje TV and let the rest of us know. |
