''Macedonians Are Not Greek!'', a July 17 advertisement by Yugoslavs from Canada, attempts to rewrite history. The historian Herodotus speaks of Perdikas, the first king of Macedonia we know, as Greek and of ancient Macedonians as a tribe kindred to the Dorians. In addition, the geographical name Macedonia derives from the very ancient Greek adjective ''makedons'' (tall), which occurs in the Homeric poems. Also, the proper names of the ancient Macedonians were all Greek - Alexander, Amyntas, Antiochus, Cleopatra, Philip - as well as the names of their cities, Heracleia, Pella, Aenae.

After the massive exodus of Slavs from Greek territory in 1944-49, there is no Slav Macedonian or other minority living in Greece today. Macedonia, being a purely geographical term, does not imply a separate nation bearing that name. It is an area shared by Greece, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, and inhabited by Greeks, Slavs and Bulgarians, respectively.

There are no ''Macedonian Canadians'' for the same reason that there are no Texan Canadians or Athenian Canadians. Macedonia is simply a geographical term and has never constituted an ethnic or historical entity. Macedonia has been the cradle of Greek history since antiquity, as was recently reconfirmed by the excavations in Vergina and Dion, and attested to by the identification of ancient Macedonians with Greek language and culture.

The history of Macedonian Hellenism is the foundation of Western civilization.

Greece used Veto to FYROM NATO bid

During the dinner with all 26 NATO members, the Greek PM Konstantinos Karamanlis used veto to FYROM NATO bid.

The Greek delegation "made it very clear that until the name issue is resolved," offering NATO membership to FYROM would "not be possible". "No solution [of the name issue] means no invitation" Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis had told reporters when leaving for Bucharest.

Greece and FYROM have been deadlocked in a fight over the former Yugoslav country's name for 17 years now. Greece refuses to recognize its constitutional name - Republic of Macedonia - because a northern Greek region is called Macedonia and it fears possible territorial claims.

Also, Athens is deeply offended by posters that have appeared in Skopje, which have the swastika superimposed on the Greek flag, as well as a magazine cover which depicts Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis as an SS officer. And the Greeks feel insulted by recent images of their neighbour's prime minister laying a wreath by a flag showing a map of so called “Greater Macedonia”, which includes parts of Northern Greece.

However, it is thoroughly proved by historic documents and archaeological discoveries which can be found in history books and museums in Greece and around the world that ancient Macedonians were Greek.

The most important archeological discovery in Macedonia is the tomb of King Philippos II. It was excavated in Vergina, Greece in 1978, and it proves beyond any doubt the Greekness of ancient Macedonia. All the findings are characteristic of the Greek culture and all the inscriptions are written using the Greek language. Among the discoveries of this tomb is the "Vergina sun" the symbol that FYROM attempted to use on its flag, initially.

The Slavs descended into the region, not before the 6th century, long after ancient Macedonia was homogenized with the rest of Greece. They don't have any historical cultural or linguistic ties with ancient Macedonia and they would be really foolish if they officially claimed that they did. There is no historic or archaeological evidence connecting them with ancient Macedonia. In any case occupying 25% of ancient Macedonian land does not give them the right to steal the Greek-Macedonian history and culture. The Macedonian civilization was part of the ancient Greek civilization. It is part of Greece's national inheritance and it cannot be used by anyone else.

The large empire Alexander the Great had conquered was too big for one successor. One general was entrusted with Macedonia; another Thrace; and a third Syria. One of Alexander's favorite generals, Ptolemy Soter, was made governor of Egypt. The esteem was mutual as can be seen in Ptolemy Soter's having Alexander's body brought for burial to Egypt, where it was permanently interred at the city Alexander had founded and named after himself -- Alexandria. It is also possible to look at this gesture as politically motivated. The same can be said of Ptolemy Soter's marriage to the daughter of the most recent Egyptian pharaoh, Nectanebo II.

Ptolemy Soter established his capital at Alexandria, founded a museum, and started collecting books for a library which, under his successors, became the center for scientific research and the best collection of Greek and Roman papyri in the world. He also initiated what was to become one of the wonders of the ancient world, the lighthouse off the coast of Alexandria on the island of Pharos.

Ptolemy Soter's rule of Egypt lasted from 332-283 B.C. The son of Ptolemy Soter, Ptolemy II Philadelphos, co-ruled for the last two years of the reign of Ptolemy Soter and then succeeded him. Cleopatra was a descendant of the Macedonian general Ptolemy Soter.
