In issue 12 of the Current World Archaeology there was a text about FYROM and its archaeological sites. However, in the last issue of the same magazine Frances Gillespie from Thessalonica, e- mail:
fgillesp@..., wrote a letter which was published and irritated the Skopjans. In the Skopjan RDM Digest suggest to writing a letter to the editors of the magazine that accused Gillespie for "Greek" propaganda"
Here a copy text from the letter that Skopjans are aggressive in the archaelogist:
Quote:
| I refer to the article entitled "a postcard from Macedonia" published in issue 12 of CWA. I object very strongly to the use of the term "Macedonia" when referring to the ex-Yugoslavian province of Macedonia. No such country as Macedonia exists today and the correct name is FYROM. As you must be well aware there have been many heated debates within the EU and at UN on this very subject. You must also be very well aware of the reasons for these debates – namely the attempts by the Serbian province (now republic of Macedonia) over the last 20 years to high jack Greek and Macedonian history for its own political agenda. The present day ex-Yugoslav republic of Macedonia and its population of ethnic Serbs has no whatever to do with Ancient Kingdom of Alexander and it's not the natural descendant of his GREEK MACEDONIA. You will note the difference in the spelling too. The territory of Alexander's ancient kingdom of Makedonia now exists as 3 provinces one in ex Yugoslavia, one in Bulgaria and largest in Northern Greece. The Bulgarians do not claim to be descendants of Alexander's Greeks they just want the land which is fair enough. However, the Serbian population of FYROM, with their ludicrous claims about being the descendants of Alexander, have created all sorts of inflammatory incidents in the region. If you wish to introduce politics then put both sides and do not use names which are at best confusing, and at worst support one side's political and ethnic ambitions. If the postcard writer, the Director of the institute of the Archaeology at the University of Anglia, does not know the correct names of the countries he visits then what hope is there for the rest of the readership. I invite him to come and visit the real Makedonia and we can enlighten him about the history and politics of the Balkans if need be. Frances Gillespie Thessalonica |
