Desperate farmers cause hostage drama in Zito Bitola
Bitola, 12:38
About a hundred farmers from Bitola and Prilep areas held hostage the deputy director of Zito Bitola in the milling company's refectory in a bid to work out payment of the last year's crop wheat the company purchased from them.
The police had to intervene to extract Stefanovski from the refractory Previously, he had a telephone conversation with Petar Ilievski, the director of Zito Bitola, who promised to notify the farmers about the possibilities for executing the payment by 13:00 hrs, Makfax Agency reports.
"There is nobody here, the police officers are the only one communicating with us. The director should have decency enough to show up and tell us when will the payment begin - in an hour, two, in a day or in five days", Petre Stojkovski, the President of the regional farmers' association said.
The farmers have been protesting for a protracted period of time, demanding payment of the wheat they delivered to Zito Bitola. Their agitation increased when the company's director issued them non-valid checks, which were reportedly guaranteed by the Agriculture Ministry.
Some of the farmers attempted entering the
Greek Consulate in Bitola to seek for asylum, but were averted by the Police.
The most desperate threatened to kill themselves by self-burning as they see no livelihood perspective. /end/
