Gruevski: Macedonia won't accept any name different from the constitutional one

Republic of Macedonia won't accept a name for international use which is different from the constitutional one.

Government's spokesman Ivica Bocevski confirmed to Makfax that Macedonian PM Nikola Gruevski said this late Friday, while commenting the latest draft-framework of understanding of the UN mediator Matthew Nimetz, he handed over yesterday to the Macedonian and Greek negotiators.

Macedonian PM added that the document contained a number of items, including some more or less problematic, but that it also included some good points.

"There is an item that is definitely unacceptable for us, which says that the Republic of Macedonia is to accept for international use a name different of the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia," Gruevski said.

The skops have been caught out by the Bakoyianni and Karamanlis strategy. The Slavomacs are starting to look like the party that cant cooperate, that dont want a peaceful and logical resolution. Since they "allow" us calling Macedonia as "ancient Macedonia", would they add an article in their constitution like "we are not related to ancient Macedonians" ???????????????

This is true, Nimetz said that Greece is making an honest attempt to solve the dispute (ERT). That article also says the Skopjian leadership is concerned about the fact that Nimetz even considered proposing international use of a name other than its constitutional name.

We mustn't bring ancient history beyond the fact that the Skopjians are not related to ancient Macedonia into this or we'll look like morons. The Greek position should be that the name is dangerous because it implies territorial claims, and all points of dispute should be traceable back to that (e.g. renaming the airport to Alexander the Great implies a territorial claim on the lands which actually formed part of his country). The dispute should be about the suppression of irredentism only, not identity games.

The Skopjian "offer" of Greece calling free Macedonia "Ancient Macedonia" is a δώρον άδωρον. Even they admit that ancient Macedonia was centred on today's free Macedonia so without a change in their name to accompany it and together with their continuing extensive use of ancient Macedonian symbols, it's basically an escalation of irredentism (we might as well call it "unredeemed Macedonia").

It looks like it's their turn to bluff now; I bet they continue with the accession negotiations though.

Greece should continue to offer the reasonable solution. The skops are now feeling the heat, Greece has to not go overboard on the issue of Ancient Macedonia...that debate is now IMHO clearly being won at an international level, the strategy is that the skopjeans should accept the compromise because the name Republic of Macedonia will imply future territorial claim, we also have to make the links between the name the skops want and there dream of a united slav Macedonia. As for there withdrawal...its the old bat and ball syndrome, the Government in Skopje have to learn to be team players... we have to make the link that for Skopje to be in the EU and NATO they need to accept that they are part of the team and not individual...if they cant play by team rules then so be it.
