Greek Canadian Congress on FYROM Name Issue

The Greek Canadian Congress has issued a tough announcement in the wake of the Canadian government's decision to recognise the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) under its contitutional name in bilateral relations.

The Greek community's pancanadian organisation, together with expatriate main opposition party deputy Jim Kariyiannis, will be giving a press conference in Ottawa on Monday to inform the mass media on the Canadian government's turnaround on the issue in question.


"Under the title of "Originality or dependent policy?" the Greek Canadian Congress protests the decision and calls on the Canadian government to recall immediately and to continue to honour UN resolutions.

The Congress considers the time chosen for the decision "strange and suspicious", linking it to the future of negotiations between Greece and FYROM on the finding of a mutually acceptable solution on the name issue and to consultations on FYROM's accession to international organisations. "The Greek Canadian Congress believes that election promises were broken by Canadian politicians concerning the Canadian government's policy on this issue and that there will be a political cost in the future," the announcement added.
