Diane Touliatos honored in Greece for writing, research, transcriptions
Athens.- Diane Touliatos, professor of music at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, was among nine distinguished artists and art scholars to receive the golden medallion of Rigas Velestinlis. The award was given May 8 during a ceremony at the Pallas Theater in Athens, Greece.

The medallion is awarded to international pioneering innovators and artists, who have promoted and united the common culture of Greece and other Balkan nations. Touliatos received the distinction for her many publications on Ancient Greek music, Medieval Byzantine liturgical and secular music, and women composers from those periods.
"No one is more surprised by this international recognition than me," Touliatos said. "I am truly honored and humbled simultaneously. I enjoy researching in old musical archives and making discoveries. To be recognized for something I love doing is very exciting."

The award was given by the international organization Rigas' Charta. The group's name refers to the map drawn by Velestinlis, a late 18th century enlightenment revolutionary, who traveled through parts of Eastern Europe. He sought unification among countries there through their support of Greek letters, culture, arts and philosophy.

Awardees were chosen by government representatives and artists from the Balkan countries of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania and Serbia. Greek President Karolos Papoulias, as well as members of Greek Parliament and ambassadors from the Balkan nations, were present during the award ceremony.

Touliatos, of Florissant, Mo., has been a faculty member in the Department of Music at UMSL since 1979, and a research fellow at the Center for International Studies at UMSL since 1982. She also serves as the director for the Center for Humanities at UMSL. She has focused her research efforts in Eastern Medieval chant, Ancient Greek music and women composers.

The Rigas' Charta award ceremony included a concert by a 40-member Byzantine choir. Their performance featured Touliatos' researched and published transcriptions of music by Kassia, a ninth-century Greek-Byzantine composer and poet. Kassia is the earliest woman composer to have her work reinterpreted by modern musical notation.

Why did you want us to see the news of a music scholar that got international distinction? Because it says "Macedonia"?

Wow you just proved to me that you are the descendant of the ancient Macedonians, and all along I thought you were a Bulgarian, thanks for showing me the light of truth.

The most recent poll I've seen said 81% of Greeks are against the name Macedonia being allowed in any way to constitute even part of Skopje's name. Thats all that matters.

But will Karamanli do anything about it? Or will he just say he will so he gets votes?

At the very least no politician can go against what 81% of his electorate think!

That might be true, Voulgaroktonos, but as we saw during our demonstrations against the bombing of Yugoslavia, no-one really pays attention to what we want.

Δεν πρεπει να βαλουμε λιγο νερο στο κρασι μας????????

Discussions concerning the name "Macedonia" started yesterday in Brussels and will continue today.

Can Greece use a veto in the EU? Can FYROM risk losing European Union money if Greece is against the use of the name "Macedonia"?

Where is our government? Why aren't we being informed via TV programmes on the government TV stations about all the pros and cons of the name issue and kept up to date concerning this situation. What the hell do we pay these loafers for? Where is the respect we deserve as tax paying citizens - after all their rich life style is only possible because a quite large percentage of the Greek population are forced to live below the line of poverty............

Do the Greeks in Greece even know about the propaganda these FYROMians are spreading? (eg - ethiopian dna study, macedonians werent greek, expansionist maps) Or do they think its just the name of the country and nothing else?

They should show all there propaganda on national tv, and you'll see what will happen.
