That's some funny shit, and I remember that it happened before!

I can't understand how the Turks can legally justify their position in an international court. The UN Treaty Laws of the Seas, allow all countries to maximize their territorial sea (and air) space to up to 12 nautical miles. The Turks even do this in the Black Sea, and I believe the Med. as well, but for some reason, the Aegean is a "special case" in their eyes.

And what will be done with this? Can we not just do what is right within the law? Take them to court, and expand our miles?

how does it work if there is an overlap? 12 nautical miles from their border overlaps some of your islands.

As far as engine failure: it happens, USA lost a $1.4 Billion plane today

The text of the Convention, specifically Article 83 "Delimitation of the continental shelf between States with opposite or adjacent coasts" (http://www.un.org/depts/los/convention_agreements/texts/unclos/part6.htm) covers that case.. But Turkey's whole argumentation on the issue is ridiculous. While they're clearly interested in the CS and its exploitation, they bring up pathetic arguments about "straits used for international navigation are subject to the regime of transit passage" which are defined under Sect.1 General Provisions (http://www.un.org/Depts/los/convention_agreements/texts/unclos/part3.htm)

When you post with them on other forum it you will realise at times they seem to live in a parallal universe. So as far as they are concerned the said UN Treaty Laws of the Seas doesn't apply to the Aegean (though they immediately implemented in the Black Sea where they got an extension) so according to them the old Law still applies. Therefore to them Greece is the "aggressor" and "harasses" their fighters on "peaceful missions".

I asked, I was under the impression that 2 miles are the nearest point. Looking at the map: Any ship that has to pass through the Aegean essentially must get Greek permission?

Some mighty real estate you guys got, hope you can protect it as decades go by.

As the map says, the 12 miles are hypothetical (but supported by international treaties) while Greece has 6 miles for the moment.

We must increase our territorial waters to 12nm as soon as possible, international law allows us to do so.

Turkey can threaten all they like but in the end they wont do anything.

There is no need for them to get Greek permission, they have ampol room to manouvre their commercial ships. Even 50 of them at one time.

I take it you believe that their is an impending threat from the east;)

This is the current Greek sea territory:

http://www.atmg.org/6miles.jpg

http://www.athensnews.gr/data/D2001/D0706/1ng7a.gif

Currently, Greece claims a 6-mile territorial sea and a 10-mile territorial airspace around all of its territory. Turkey claims a 12-mile territorial sea along its coast in the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea but only a 6-mile territorial sea along its coast in the Aegean.

The very least you could do is to pay attention to what others post..

Had you read the links to the convention provided you would have known of little issues titled "right of transit passage", "innocent passage" and "high seas" which trash this ridiculous claim of permission needed.
