In the book <Travels in northern Greece>,written in 1835 by William Martin Leake, the author describes his travel in Macedonia.Although Macedonia wasn't at that time part of the Greek state,it was considered by W.M.Leake in this book as Greek land,a <celebrated province of Greece>,as you'll ascertain when i'll post the rest of the interesting excerpts of his book.
When he was in Thessaloniki,he visited the church of St. Dimitrius, where he mentions an inscription in honour of Loukas Spandounis, who died in 1481 and is described as <pride of the nation of Hellenes> and <scion of the Hellenes> :
