Serious Macedonian nationalist historiography rejects the idea of any direct continuity between ancient and modern Macedonians by acknowledging that the ancient Macedonians were not Slavs and that the modern Macedonians are the descendants of a Slavic people whose ancestors settled in the Balkans in the sixth century a.d. Nevertheless, these sources do devote significant attention to ancient Macedonia* Most accept the fact that the elite of ancient Macedonia were Hellc-nized. Some sources state that it has not been proved that the ancient Macedonians were Greek, while others conclude that the ancient Macedonians were a distinct non-Greek people* Many of these sources, however, with their references to "the ancient Macedonian state" as "the first Macedonian state" and their references to "Alexander the Macedonian" spreading the glory of the Macedonian name throughout the world clearly promote the idea of continuity between ancient and modern Macedonia.22
Many well-respected ancient historians have attempted to determine whether the ancient Macedonians "were Greeks" in an atmosphere more removed from the competing claims of contemporary Greek and Macedonian nationalists. Much of their work has been based on an essentialist approach to the subject of ethnic or national identity. Ac-cording to this approach the ancient Macedonians "were Greeks" if their culture was sufficiently similar to ancient Greek culture. Detailed studies of various aspects of ancient Macedonian culture have revealed, as one might expect, that it exhibits both similarities and differences when compared to ancient Greek culture. This has led some ancient historians to describe the ancient Macedonians somewhat ambiguously as "half-Greek" or as living at the periphery of the Greek world (Borza 1982a: 17).

Persea, το έχω ξαναδεί αυτό. Θα ήταν ενδιαφέρον όμως να δούμε τι λέει ένας ανθρωπολόγος για την κατασκεύη, της "μακεδονικής" ταυτότητας.
