The cost of Defending Our Borders by Air

Just to put things into perspective, the undeclared war between Turkey and Greece over the Aegean during the last 30 years has already exacted a high cost, according to a report by the Ta Nea newspaper last Saturday. From 1974 to 2006, 115 Greek pilots lost their lives together with 197 planes, mostly fighter jets. Naturally, the figure also includes jets crashing for reasons other than dogfights over the Aegean. But one can take it as the result of the high level of alertness adopted by the air forces of both countries. Since 1975 Greek fighter planes have carried out 1,300,000 hours of flights defending the Greek national airspace. Every hour costs approximately 5,000 euros. Training Greek pilots in interception techniques against the Turks costs 1,250,000 euros daily. On the other side of the Aegean, during the years 1977 to 2006, 91 Turkish pilots have lost their lives in 141 incidents in which 146 fighter jets have crashed into the sea.
