it has always been my suspicion that early on (i.e. late 1800's and early 1900's) the Greeks played a role in baptizing the slavophones "Macedonian" as opposed to Bulgarian.

The Bulgarians were a big threat back then, so anything to de-bulgarize them would be good. Plus, they thought that "Macedonian" was probably an intermediate step to these people becoming fully Hellenized.

How wrong they were.
