Over half of Montenegrin voters, .i.e. 55.4%, voted in favour of Montenegro's separation from Serbia, announced the Centre for Free Elections and Democracy (CESID) following Sunday's referendum. Late on Sunday night, Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic claimed victory for his independence drive to dissolve the country’s union with Serbia. Djukanovic’s party gathered 55.4%, just over the 55% threshold set by the European Union for the independence drive to be accepted. Montenegro will hence become the sixth independent state of Tito's former Yugoslavia. Turnout at polling stations reached 86.3%.

Opposition Awaits Official Results "Tonight, with the majority decision by the citizens of Montenegro, the independence of the country has been renewed," Djukanovic told supporters cheering the climax of his decade-long campaign to restore the independence Montenegro last enjoyed in 1918.

"Montenegro is a new independent state, a new member of the United Nations, aspiring to become a full EU Member-State and join the community of European peoples," added the Montenegrin Prime Minister.

Awaiting official results, Predrag Bulatovic, leader of the "No" campaign, refused to concede defeat although he admitted trailing by nearly 10 percent. He accused the government of trying to pre-empt the result by calling supporters out in an "aggressive and arrogant" manoeuvre. "The results are not final until they are confirmed by the state referendum commission," he said, urging the government to ask its supporters to leave the streets.
