For the people who live in Melbourne and need tickets for this event, this can go to www.myfootball.com.au and register and get their tickets 3 days earlier than the public release... i.e. you can get your tickets on the 27th March instead of waiting till they are almost sold out on the 1st April! :) :clapping: :worshippy :clap2:

Also looks like a few thousand Greeks will be coming from Sydney. I have never been to the MCG, can`t wait to see it half full of Greeks.

I hope you are right but we have to be honest,I mean get getting 50,000 Greeks into the MCG will be a huge effort..i don`t think they will get 70,000. remember the Greek team will be here for a picnic, there is nothing to play for.

I`m sure they are but i hope that you are not a believer in the theory that there are 1,000,000 or even 500,000 Greeks in Melbourne.
I think we Greeks tend to over-estimate our community. Greeks have not been coming to Australia on a large scale for 30 years now.
More Greeks leave Australia then arrive to Australia and have been for years. The community is gradualy getting smaller as alot of the original immigrants are old and many have passed away.
Anyway, that`s a different topic..I hope we get as many Greeks as we can at the MCG, paint the place blue and white and have an awesome night!

Yes, thats right, and as a matter of fact the last census we had in Australia (back in 2001) stated that there were 400,000 Greeks in Melbourne... i.e. About 350,000 from the mainland and 50,000 Greek Cypriots... So thats not bad - definately enough to get at least 50,000 of them to the MCG :clapping: :worshippy :clap2:

400,000 in Melbourne?
Wasn`t it more like 375,000 in Australia. I will look into this.

The 2001 Census results released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveal a nation of rich cultural diversity.
Ancestry
There were over 200 different ancestries reported, with up to two ancestries recorded for each person. The most common ancestry was Australian, with 6,739,594 or 35.9% of all people choosing this as one of their responses; next most popular were English (6,358,880 or 33.9%), Irish (1,919,727 or 10.2%), Italian (800,256 or 4.3%) German (742,212 or 4.0%), Chinese (556,554 or 3.0%), Scottish (540,046 or 2.9%) and Greek (375,703 or 2.0%).
Language
Italian, with 353,605 speakers, is the most popular language other than English spoken at home, followed by Greek, 263,717, Cantonese, 225,307, Arabic 209,372, and Vietnamese with 174,236 speakers.

"The Australian Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census of Population and Housing indicated that over 160,000 Victorians identified their ancestry as being Greek, and almost 60,000 of these people were in fact born in Greece."

Not that we should somehow feel bad that our community may not be as big as we thought. Greek is the 3rd most spoken language in Australia.
Greeks make up 2% of the total population, and with the Greek Cypriots our community would be well over 400,000.

Fair enough, but at the same time, I've met a lot of Greek people who wouldnt associate themselves as being Greek because they are 2nd or 3rd generation Greeks so... Thats the reason why you may bump into a lot of people who are have Greek surnames (and are therefore Greek), but arent actually registered on the 2001 census as Greeks... :)
