The Battle of Kilkis-Lahanas (Η μάχη Κούκους (Κιλκίς)-Λαχανά) took place during the Second Balkan War between Greece and Bulgaria for the town of Kilkis in Macedonia. The battle lasted three days from June 19, 1913 to June 21st. The Greek army defeated the Bulgarian army.

During the night of 16-17 June, 1913, the Bulgarians, without official declaration of war, attacked their former Greek and the Serbian allies, and managed to evict the Serbs from Gevgeli, cutting off communication between them and the Greeks. However, they failed to drive the Serbs away from the Axios river line. After repulsing the initial Bulgarian attack of June 17, the Greek army, under King Constantine, advanced with 8 Divisions and a Cavalry Brigade, while the Bulgarians (1 Infantry Division, 3 Brigades, and elements of other units, under General Ivanov) retreated to the naturally strong defensive position of the Kilkis-Lahana line.

The Greek forces established contact with the Bulgarian positions on the night of June 19, and the attack commenced on the whole front the next day. The Greeks made slow progress, paying with many casualties against the well-entrenched Bulgarians, primarily because of their close deployment on open field and the frontal attack tactics of their High Command. Despite this, the town of Kilkis fell on June 21, forcing the Bulgarian commander to retreat, but managing to prevent a rout.

Due to its significance, the Battle of Kilkis gave its name to a Greek battleship, the Kilkis (the former USS Mississippi) in 1914.

If we all try to take back what was ours millenias ago, it will become a pretty bloody mess. So, I suggest you personally follow the steps of Alexander the Great to India and remain there.

Bugarash, I would be obliged if you could explain to me how did Serres got burnt twice during the past century...

...And why...

Ptolemaios

Why the Bulgarians were so close friends of Nazis?

Can Bugarash explain the systematic slaughter of innocent Greek people in the area, over the ages?

A UN official documentary statement:
During the German occupation (WW II- 1941-44),
the Bulgarian occupation forces killed/executed 25.000 greeks [Bulgaria was an Ally of the Nazis, and took action on the occupied areas of macedonia]

The false nationalism (stolen history, creation of irredentism) is a basic characteristic, of nations that remain undeveloped, and so they reach other ways to escape from fatefull reality.

Moreover when their neighbour country, is more developed, both in economic and in cultural level (actually in every aspect), it is expected that the less favoured countries will express their zealousness in every possible way.

The most common tactic is the false nationalism based on fake historic documents and facts.

So, it is not a coincidence, that every country around Greece, has developed that kind of behaviour. Greece has the "honey" and everyone wants a spoonful.

Why there is no claim of FYROM against Bulgaria?
Why Bulgaria has no claims against Turkey? etc etc.

Because there is nothing to ask for (economy, or development)!

So, as long as Greece makes the difference in every aspect, the false "nationalism" and other false expressions of our "beloved" neighbours should be expected....

It was your decision to entrench your army in the hills near and inside on the city of Kilkis and to use the town as part of the battlefield, we have no other option, for this reason we had the casualties of 5652 men.

What do we know about culture?
Make a history review to world history, and you will find out. If you still dont,

just see some recent achievements in all levels:
Nobels, Nobel nominations, Music (very popular in Bulgaria I think....), Theatre, Olympic Games (this is more familiar to you), lack of revenge (remember comitates?), Life quality (some neighbours, are governed by Mafia, probably you know which ones).

RESPECT OF LIFE (UN data documents: they reveal the cultural and humanitarian level of Bulgarians during the bulgaro-Nazi occupation: 25.000 executions of innocent greeks. Ask about Doxato in Drama and some other villages which admired your "beloving" feelings).

Concerning the "beloved", I just point out your "beloving" attitude and behaviour to greeks: Always claiming a place you never actually owned (you arrived at the area after the 6th century AD), and causing always problems in every aspect, up to know. Could you remind us which was the common tactic of comitages/comitates: Cleansing....

Thank you in anticipation

To christov

Next time you have a war (I wish you never have a war again), just give a notice that your army is capable to fight with honor and pride.

You see the recent history has shown that is difficult for the Bulgarian army to fight straight:
difficult to accept the superiority of the Victor,
difficult to avoid collaborations (Turks, Nazis etc etc)
difficult to avoid improper tactics [executions (1941-44, mass kidnaping of children (`904-12)]

And finally:

Dear friend,
You should first improve the whole internal situation and fix the problems in your country (politics, corruption, economy, safety, life quality etc etc)....
Do that, and then be sure that is possible to improve the Greek-Bulgarian matters and relationships

Oh, I see one answer isn't enough for you...What do we know about culture?
Make a history review to world history, and you will find out. If you still dont, just see some recent achievements in all levels:
Nobels, Nobel nominations, Music (very popular in Bulgaria I think....), Theatre, Olympic Games (this is more familiar to you), lack of revenge(remember comitates?), Life quality (some neighbours, are governed by Mafia, probably you know which ones).Ptolemaios, all my questions were to you personally. If you don't like any of them just drop it; but if you want to answer - give some straight answers as a man: one-to-one. What you gave I call "mishmash" and can not be qualified as "honor and pride". So try again. About the culture - I am really curious what you'll say about it.RESPECT OF LIFE (UN data documents: they reveal the cultural and humanitarian level of Bulgarians during the bulgaro-Nazi occupation: 25.000 executions of innocent greeks. Ask about Doxato in Drama and some other villages which admired your "beloving" feelings). Are you sure it can be applied only to the Bulgarian army? My answer is NO, but let me see yours!Concerning the "beloved", I just point out your "beloving" attitude and behaviour to greeks: Always claiming a place you never actually owned (you arrived at the area after the 6th century AD), and causing always problems in every aspect, up to know. Could you remind us which was the common tactic of comitages/comitates: Cleansing....Oh, what was the Greek tactics? Drinking coffee or playing tabla? Don't be ridiculous Ptolemaios! A war is a nasty business and I hate it! About the 6th cantury and owning a place - I don't claim anything. But how long do you think is reasonable to be "presented" in one place in order to own it? Can't you calculate that since the time of the Slavonic settlement there are more than 14 centuries? I am curious to see how you tell the owners in South and North America, Australia, New Zealand, etc. that they actually don't own their property there...Dear friend,
You should first improve the whole internal situation and fix the problems in your country (politics, corruption, economy, safety, life quality etc etc)....
Do that, and then be sure that is possible to improve the Greek-Bulgarian matters and relationshipsDear friend, really there are some problems in Bulgaria and if you know a place, where everything is "honey and roses", please, tell me!

Ptolemaios

Dear Christov,
OK lets play the 10 questions name:

Even in the jail there are problems about safety and security but it is not the ideal place to live: "it is not honey and roses" too....
This proves some "culture" of yours : you prefer to live in a chaos, tolerating a chaotic situation, and giving an excuse for it! GREAT!!!!

You know in greek language there is the word "dialogos" dialogue in common english,
and as far as I know the dialogue does not oblige you to have only one answer (you see the world goes front and beyond, and does not like police tactics, or communist tactics (like your previous past), of "yes" and "no" answers).

Concerning the mismatch you stated, I am surprised because, it is the first time to read something like that. Do you know any army which fights at the field, to have restrictions about its size.
By your thinking the war is a football game where everyone should have the same number of players....

So, its a good time for you to complain to USA, for its army superiority, when they decide to fight smaller armies in size (like Serbia, Iraq, Vietnam...).

Also you can make complains to the ex-Otoman Empire for fighting with more soldiers against their enemy armies (Greece included).
But you see, the greek army did not care about sizes and could win (300 Spartans killed 50.000 Persians, 500 Soldiers of Kolokotronis killed 30.000 Ottoman soldiers in a single fight, what a result???!!!)

As Aeschylus said: We the Greeks, we never counted the size of the enemy in the battlefield.

And my dear friend when an enemy army invades and violates everything (in every sense) the defending army responds in order to defeat the enemy's army, and only (not like some other armies that prefer to kill innocents, and make guerilla fights against unarmed citizens) ... That's the name of the game in the war.

Concerning your Nazi-Army what you try to prove me?
That the UN data is not valid for you?
You try to show me what the other armies did, and you try to avoid accepting the real historical facts?
Of course there were other armies collaborating with the Germans, but one thing is for sure: that one army of those collaborators was YOURS commiting WAR CRIMES!

Concerning your setllements in the Balkans, one thing is for sure. You always tried to claim territories, causing battles, fights and wars all the time.
I really dont care about New Zealnd or America's areas.
You can easily go there and make your claims over American lands if you feel so much injusticed.

This is the problem about Bulgaria: You could never stay in peace, so you could be productive in every sense (What was the influence of Bulgaria in World History and the World's civilisation???). Wars, wars, propaganda, and slaughters of innocent people.
Oh, OK and some cultural splits during communism regime as a part of the communist's propaganda (with athletics, traditional dances and some Opera performers).....

Concerning my culture: My origin is my culture. Thank God I have a greek heritage and this is my cultural passport...

I dont know if culture, is trivial game for you, or a land demanding game (should I pass any test?)...

I prefer to drink coffee or to play tavli, because I dont prefer to kill innnocent people, or having claims on fantasy matters.
It is a more civilized act than having a gun, or making stupid teritorial claims with irredentism strungle, and having false views of the past.
I wish you could drink a coffee too, but it seems very expensive and very unsafe at your country...

(By the way all the Bulgarian coast line from Burgas by deep south was greek (Philipoupolis too-Plovdiv). The greeks left enough cultural infrastructure and cultural heritage to you, making it able and appropriate for touristic development. But you see, even though we have no claims over those lands....)

As I see my friend, the word "respect" is missing from your vocabulary.
For you, being a state is a clean up business, with some genocides included.

I notice a clear lack of culture and civilization.
It seems that the Mafia rule, is above all, for you....
That exlains why you did so many crimes in the area and what is your view about comitates, nazi-collaborators etc etc.

With this kind of mentality I wont be surprised if someone arrives in Bulgaria and buy it, and rename it to United States of Banania, after 14 centuries...

Chronicle of the Kilkis-Lahana battle

After the signing of the London peace treaty between the Balkan states and Turkey (May 17th, 1913), the allied Balkan countries felt that the time had come for them to settle their differences regarding the conquered territories.

Bulgarian demands at the time included its desire to expand over Macedonia. Serbia and Bulgaria had already signed an agreement and settled their territorial disputes, but Serbia at the end did not recognise the agreement since, at first it believed that Albania would finally be part of Serbia, thus gaining access to the Adriatic sea. The treaty provided for an independent Albanian state and Serbia's gains to the west were
reduced.
Bulgaria, however, insisted to annex all the agreed territories.

While Serbia recognised as a Hellenic right the annexation of all the liberated territories,
Bulgaria sought to drive Greece out from those territories and create the Great Bulgaria of the 1878 Saint Stephan Treaty.

Greece and Serbia, since May 19, 1913, had signed a defensive alliance. Bulgaria had already made a decision for a surprise attack against the Hellenic and Serbian army.

During the night of 16-17 June, 1913,
the Bulgarians without any official declaration of war surpassingly attacked the Greeks and the Serbs, thus achieving to occupy Gevgeli, cutting off communication between the Greeks and the Serbs. However, they halted their advance towards Thessaloniki because they failed to drive the Serbs away from Axios river.

As a result, the Bulgarian army settled defensively in the Kilkis-Lachana Line and the surrounding heights. The area offered many defence advantages because the ground is totally uncovered and offers perfect observation and fire fields.
Holding this line, the Bulgarians, were able to secure Serres, Sidirocastro, Doiran and Gevgeli, to control the Strimonas river bridges, which were important for their re-supply, while they secured their withdrawal in case of an emergency.

The Bulgarians deployed 32 Infantry Battalions, 1 Cavalry Regiment and 62 guns. The overall forces of the Hellenic Army were 73 Infantry Battalions, 33 Field Artillery Battalions, 9 Mountain Artillery Battalions, 8 Cavalry Companies and 8 Cavalry Platoons.
During the night of June 19th, 1913, 4 Hellenic Divisions (2nd-3rd-4th-5th) and the Cavalry Brigade moved to occupy Kilkis City.
They met the Bulgarian outposts force which are fought obstinate. An obstinate and tough fight was conducted and our forces gained the land foot by foot. The 1st Infantry Regiment was in the Mandres village heights and east of Pikrolimni was the 16th Infantry Regiment.

While the day went by, the attack was generalised. The Divisions faced severe casualties but in the end the Bulgarians were forced to withdraw towards the Lipsidriou-Mavroneri Height-Ginekocastro Line. The dark is coming. During the day that followed the Bulgarians withdrew but the war was not over yet.

Early in the morning of June 20, 1913, the courageous Regiments of the 5th Division (16th-22nd-23rd) after a tough and bloody fight occupied the Kristoni rail station, the southern part of the Kristoni village and the surrounding heights.

However, despite their courageous efforts they could not march towards Kilkis because the Bulgarians were constantly bombing the ground. The 4th Division fought courageously and by mid-day occupied the eastern parts of the Kristoni heights and made contact with the main line of defence of the enemy.
The casualties were tremendous. The 2nd Division marched under the fire of the Bulgarians, overrided the enemy and occupied the eastern parts of the Potamia village heights. The 3rd Division, after a tough fight, overrided the Bulgarians and occupies the Levedochori, Baptistis and Megali Vrisi villages.

The Cavalry Brigade marched towards the Megali Vrisi and Kastanies villages but due to arrival of enemy re-enforcement's was forced to retreat.

Despite the victories of the Hellenic Army, Kilkis City was still under Bulgarian hands. However it had to be occupied at all cost.
Full of agony, the Field Marshal sent to all Divisions his historic order, which showed the depth of his agony, but also showed his unbending will for victory "TOMORROW I DEMAND THE FALL OF KILKIS".

Early in the morning of June 21, 1913, at 03:30 the attack towards Kilkis started. The heroic Regiments of the 2nd Division (1st and 7th) advanced against the Bulgarians. Within 15 minutes they approach the first enemy defence line.
The Bulgarian fired against the advancing Greeks. At 04:10 early in the morning the enemy defence line was occupied after a tough fight.

Behind the first line however was the second enemy defence line, against which the Hellenic army attacked. At 05:00 in the morning the second line fell too and the Hellenic forces moved against the third and most important defence line. An unequal fight is conducted. The Greeks were marching dauntless under enemy fires.
The Bulgarians defended their position obstinate.
The 3rd Regiment was also engaged in battle. The Bulgarians conducted strong counter-attacks. Due to the activities of the remaining officers of the 1st and 7th Regiments and the incomparable heroism of our soldiers the counter-attacks were driven back. New attacks followed by the Greeks. The Regiments were constantly gaining ground, occupied the third line positions and drove out the Bulgarians.

The other Divisions (4th, 5th and 3rd) deployed around Kilkis and continued from the early ours of the day their fight against the Bulgarians. The Bulgarians provided for strong resistance and with cannons engaged the Greeks. The fight however, continued.

At 11:00 Kilkis was occupied and at 11:15 the Hellenic flag was proudly hoisted on Saint George height. The Bulgarians withdrew all over the front.

The three day battle of Kilkis was over. The victory proved important and prejudged the outcome of the 2nd Balkan War. From Kilkis, the Hellenic Army marched towards Doiran, Kerkini, Stromnitsa, Deli Risar and Kresna straits. The victory was great, so were the casualties: 5.652 men.

With such sacrifices, Greece decisively resisted efforts to redraw its borderline and the demands of its neighbour over its territories. Contributed decisively to the consolidation of the Balkan map and showed that the respect over those border settlements and peaceful co-existence are the only ways for the countries in the region.

Consequences and results of the Kilkis-Lahana battle

After the heroic battles of Kilkis and Lahana, the bulgarian general of Serres Voulkov,
received the order to leave Serres and to head to Sofia, under the fear of the Greek marching.
So, he left Serres and headed to Sidirokastro where the retreated bulgarian army was gathering.

Before the bulgarians leave Sidirokastro, they showed their revengeful mania, to civilians:

They slaughtered:
the Bishop of Sidirokastro and 2 priests
100 notables of the city
and many women and children.
The above scenes will be repeated in 1917.

Just before the bulgarians leave the city of Serres, destroyed all the infrastructure,
and they let the comitadjies to repeat their common tactics: such as slaughtering of
innocent Serres-civilians and setting afire the city of Serres.

18 churces were burnt
hundreds of civilians slaughtered.
These scenes continued up to the evening of the 28th of June, when the bulgarians decided to
leave Serres and heading to Sofia, under the fear of the marching Greek army.
During the their leaving,
they arrested many notables of the city, whose dead bodies found on the route to Libounovo.

Pointless to state other bulgarian acts (before, during and after the 2nd balkan War) such as mass executions of greeks (Drama, Souli, etc atc) mass kiddnaping of children, arsonisms, torturing, arresting of Kavala Jews, war-crimes etc etc.
All these during a period for over of 50 years.....

The topic is about the "Battle of Kilkis-Lahana", so don't feel obliged to write a new encyclopedia and leave that copy-paste thing. I asked you also about the photo, posted by Bugarash.

Historic truth is quite hard and hurts more...

Could anyone give us some data about the casualty list
of the bulgarian army during the 2nd Balkan War?

Thank you my friend.

My previous question was about the 2nd Balkan War not the 2nd WW, but its not a bad idea to open a new thread on this subject.
