Hard to say...

I can literally drown in tsipouro,
can't get enough "περδικα" (famous grouse) in me,
crazy about Absolute (blue) with a slice of lemon, but only when its straight from the freezer,
always love a cold wine (red or white no prob.),
really enjoy a cold beer but hate the effect... :toiletsmi ,
if a Mescal is in the house, I'll surely fight you for that worm..

Damn it.. now that I think of it, I sound like a drunkard

Greece secures rights to ouzo
Ouzo and tsipouro are to be recognized as Greek products by the European Union and will be regarded as drinks that can only be produced in Greece, Agriculture Minister Evangelos Bassiakos said yesterday.

Following an EU meeting of agriculture ministers in Brussels, Bassiakos said that the legal protection of the drinks will be secured across the 25-nation bloc.

“The minister succeeded after difficult negotiations to register the drinks ouzo, tsipouro and tsikoudia as geographically protected,” the ministry said.

According to an unnamed Agriculture Ministry official, Greece had also allowed fellow EU member Cyprus the right to make ouzo when it joined in 2004, Reuters reported.

The EU ministers also agreed yesterday to give Cyprus the exclusive right to produce zivania, a colorless alcoholic drink with a light aroma of raisins.

The EU has previously granted brand protection to other drinks, such as champagne from France.

Sounds good, but does that mean that countries like Italy who make 'Grappa' which is the same thing as 'Tsipouro' cannot continue to make it?

No,i don't think so.The grappa is an italian product made according to specific procedures from italian wines, just like tsipouro is made in a specific way. They are not consumed in the same way,but i don't know if italy has secured it as a product.

I understand the need to protect cultural integrity, even food or drink. But can it work, after all Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece share a common climate and topography. Can you really legislate an area to stop making a product because someone in an office a thousand or more miles away decides they can't? I don't know...

No,no,the EU permits to any other country in the mediterranean that wants to produce ouzo for example, to produce it, but this product won't be put out in the market with the name ouzo.It can be called in any other way.
An example is an italian cheese called provolone.I found out that this particular cheese is produced in Greece too,in Metsovo region, and one can find it in the market under the name metsovone. So ,a consumer who wants to buy the italian cheese or the greek ouzo won't be a victim of deceit by someone who produced the famous greek ouzo :clap2: in Taiwan.

One last question. If ouzo is marketed under a different name can you put ouzo anywhere on the label (for example, Bulgarian-style Ouzo or Sicilian Ouzo)?

If ouzo is marketed under different name and the word “ouzo” is printed anywhere on the label, it can be persecuted. But if the product belong to a company, that can prove Greek management – not.
