A Letter from the Sculptor

Why are we changing our path from the mountain

carving? The new project we are undertaking is just as powerful, and feels that time has stood still since 365 B.C. for a monument to be built to honor a great man, it is an artistic attempt with many individuals involved: artists, sculptors, and architects. The message is very clear, the “Sun of Vergina” will shine once again on this prestigious monument, and history will awaken by remembering a Great King and his life in this world.

Description of Monument:

The half moon sphere stands 46 meters by 31 meters wide, and the front of the half moon sphere will be covered in high polished stainless steel squares. The head of Alexander the Great will be casted in bronze and stained in white wash patina. The measurements of the bronze sculpture and his head will stand at 10.1 by 4.6 meters wide. His head will be placed on the left top of the half moon sphere. As the day goes by the sunlight will reflect Alexander’s face in each square which will make his appearance seem as if it is moving through time. The half moon sphere will also serve as an open theatre.

The Fountain of Voukefalas:

The fountain will be fabricated out of Thasos marble being placed within the center of the fountain area. Alexander the Great’s horse Voukefalas will be casted out of bronze and stained with green rusted patina. The fountain will showcase an amazing water display every hour on the hour.

Laser Show and Sound:

The two ancient columns in front of the half moon sphere, at nightfall will project images of Alexander the Great and his life will end with a spectacular finale of a laser and sound show

Our Mission:

Our mission for the grounds and a monument of this caliber to become reality will follow precautions that will be taken within the environment. The projection and completion of the monument won't take no more than three years, which will change the known region with growth and prosperity. A school for the Arts will be erected entailing all media hands on workshops awarding scholarships for the arts to art students aiding his/her goals and dreams. We will also feature a sculpture garden where artists may display his/her work throughout the garden grounds of the monument. Since the half moon sphere acts as an open theatre, performances in theatre and music will be showcased.

I prefer the mountain idea. The new sculpture is too Western culture...

What happened to Hellenic architecture in Greece which is used all over the world ie Washington DC, Greek columns on prestigious buildings....

Laser and light show? Is it going to be club?

I don't mond it so much, but it pales compared to the mountain. How can the Greeks go back now? Seriously, the powers have to take a serious look and a more seriuos chat over the 45 coffee breaks they take each day.

where is this meant to be? I like the statue in Thessaloniki the way it is. Just a quality museum dedicated to him would be enough. I think the same group did in fact make a small museum with the donations they got for the mountain

I hope this doesn't turn into a contest with Greece and FYROM constantly trying to outdo each other with new sculptures and artworks, each one uglier than the last.

We could spend our money in much better and smarter actions. The Alexander the Great museum was a good move but i think this one isnt really needed. A great museum about Macedonian history would be appreciated (another thought would be the existing Museum of Pella, although its kinda small). We should create also museums about the history of Epirus and Thrace.

A little too modernistic for me. Looks like a structure that should be located outside a casino in Vegas. I do have a question though. Why is there no Alexander exhibit in the National Archeological Museum in Athens? Why is there no significant structure honoring Alexander in Athens? It's ridiculous that the capital barely acknowledges Alexander. Comments?

I just got back from Thessaloniki. I had a chance to visit the redesigned archaeological museum. It focuses on Macedonia. They did a nice job.

It was a great experience. I felt proud. There is a theme to the museum. The people working there direct everyone through the museum in its appropriate order. You start with Makedonia in prehistoric times and go through it seeing how the people of this area evolved. Lots of excavated things to see. All kinds of jewelry, swords, helmets, gravestones (Written in Greek of course. Did anyone other than brainwashed Fyromians expect anything different?) You really get a feel for who the Macedonians were. Great experience! I recommend it to everyone visiting Thessaloniki.

yeah from memory that was the best museum i went to in Greece. Another real quality museum dedicated to Alexander is whats needed more than a monument

Well,I will visit this museum in a few days.

As far as the momument issue is concerned,I believe Greece has to make a large one! I dont care how it will look like,I just want a large momument for our Alexander!

He was one of the greatest Hellenes,so he deserves the greatest momument!
