When PROPAGANDA goes to school
Translation of Ntina Karatziou's article in the "ΚΥΡΙΑΚΑΤΙΚΗ ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΤΥΠΙΑ"

The Skopian issue enters a new critical phase after the latest Nimits proposal being rejected by the Hellinic side and the begining of talks fot the Treaty of Accession into the EU for FYROM is connected with the name solution..

But even though the name issue seems to be the central debated topic, there are more than a few other issues that should be taken care of. Among those that have been recorded (even by the UN mediator) is the issue of the 'occupied lands' propaganda. This is of high interest especially since it is passed in the educational system of FYROM and is recorded in their official school books.

This opinion has been expressed after an over 10yr research conducted by P.Ksochellis, Prof. of the Aristotelean Uni. of Thessaloniki and by the researchers of the "Books and Intercultural Education Research Center", after research conducted on the History and 'Language books of FYROM and other 4 Balkan countries.

The finds of quotes and expressions used is very interesting....

"In the History Book of the 2nd class of High School of 1992, we find a map that presents the "National Borders" of FYROM. These borders include, today's FYROM, Bulgaria's lands of the geographic region named Makedonia and parts of Hellinic lands..Th NW borders begin at the Hellinic-Albanian borders, follow the ridgeline of Olympus and continue to encompass all lands along the Aegean shores up to the edge of the municipalities of Ksanthi and Kavala"

-No action what so ever is taken to alter the later textbooks, despite the 1995 agreement that prescribed "the immediate and effective measures to ban any hostile or propaganda performed by goverment service"

"In 1996-97, the Language and History books continue the propaganda of "the quaintness of the pseudo-Macedonian nation and its name. And speak of the necessity to accomplish the national vision of the liberation of the conquered lands that are currently under foreign occupation by neighboring countries"

The Vileats of the 21st Cent..

The textbooks of all the 8 classes of the educational system, as do all the linguistic test-texts present the geographical regions occupied by the Ottoman Empire in Europe and are presented as their "homeland".

-"The Vilaets of Thessaloniki, Monastiri and Kosovo-Skopje. The general geographic region of Makedonia as was adopted by European diplomacy of the 19th cent. This is presented as "Macedonian land, land of our fathers, land of our ancestors. From Ochrid, to the Aegean and to the Pirin" this is how the textbook of the 8th grade presents it..

- Equally provocative and a very good example of the mentality cultivated in the minds of the youth, is this verse of the 2nd class of Primary School:
"To Macedonia with love: From Pelister to Pirin, from Vroutok to the white Aegean, three flowers, a buquet, one people united. Macedonia, beloved land !!
Forever beautiful land, your very name awakens your love, one heart in three flowers, you've always offered us love..
Macedonia, the eternal name !!!"

It is obvious that the intention of promoting such a verse, is the promotion of a feeling of inferiority, of being treated unjustly, the continuous cultivation of this notion of being "ethnically unpriviliged".. What else would be the reason for the questions asked in the following text:
"Notice the verse "one heart in three flowers", which is the heart mentioned ?
Which are the three flower that the poet speaks of ??

-Specialist have concluded that these 'history books' cultivate a notion of 'lost homes'and ethnic persecution of neighboring people like the Hellines, Serbs and Bulgarians, especially in those simple language texts..
The notion of an "Unliberated Aegean Macedonia" and "historic persecution of minorities in the Hellinic region" is strongly promoted by all books...

Very common is the use of the terms : "anti-Macedonians", "assimilation", "destruction of identity", "persecution", "forbidden", "harshness" ..... etc
A very good example:
The vile Hellines :

In the books of 8th grade..
On WW1:
Just before the breakout of WW1, Macedonia was separated into 3 parts, one to Serbia, one to Bulgaria and Hellas and one small part to Albania.. The Macedonians were forcively enlisted into the armies of all three powers to fight ofr foreign ideals.. Under no circumstance was one side better than the other, for what they tolerated under the Hellinic rule was no better than that of the Bulgarian"

Same book
On WW2:
"After the Treaty of Varkiza the Macedonian name and language was once again banned, as was every ethnic or political right the Macedonian people had managed to obtain during their struggle for independance.Immediately after 1945, the Hellinic goverments started a plan of continuous terror, with its objective being to force the Macedonians to immigrate or finally mutilate them both ethnically and politically"

-"the brutality of the Hellines, the enprisonments, the uncalled for retaliation and the forcefull persecutions of the Macedonians startled the whole world. For this continuous inhuman behaviour, een the UN had shown major interest"...
