Firefighters continue efforts to contain tens of fire fronts in many parts of the country. The fire on Mt Parnitha has caused a lasting environmental damage.

Most fire fronts have been contained, however, fires are still burning in Flambouri, Tartiza and Radar while the fire in Shimatari rekindled. East Attika prefecture has been declared on a state of alert. Prime-minister, Kostas Karamanlis called an extraordinary meeting at the Maximos mansion at 06:30 this morning to estimate the situation following the fires, particularly the fire on Mt. Parnitha.

Attending the meeting were the Ministers of Interior, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Defense, Vaggelis Meimarakis, Public Order, Byron Polidoras, Development, Dimitris Sioufas, State Minister, Thodoros Roussopoulos, Fire Department Chief, Andreas Kois and the general secretary of the Civil Protection Secretariat, Panagiotis Fourlas.. In an interview with NET, Thracomacedones mayor said that the catastrophe in the major greenery source of Athens is huge. The national park is very rich in endemic species of animals and plants, it has the largest population in Greece of red deer. I saw animals burned alive.

In the meantime a military force is on the alert to help in fire extinguishing efforts and 50% of the police force.

Η κατάσταση που έχει προκύψει εξετάστηκε σε έκτακτη σύσκεψη που έγινε στο Μέγαρο Μαξίμου το πρωί της Παρασκευής υπό τον πρωθυπουργό. Εξάλλου, λόγω της κατάστασης, ο πρωθυπουργός ανέβαλε την αυριανή του επίσκεψη με το ΥΠΕΧΩΔΕ στα έργα της Εγνατίας οδού, ενώ βρέθηκε στο κέντρο επιχειρήσεων της Πυροσβεστικής και μέσω ασυρμάτου ευχαρίστησε όλους τους πυροσβέστες για τις προσπάθειές τους.

Εξερχόμενος της σύσκεψης, ο υπουργός Δημόσιας Τάξης Βύρων Πολύδωρας δήλωσε ότι η μάχη συνεχίζεται και τα δύσκολα δεν πέρασαν. Προτεραιότητα, όπως είπε, είναι οι φωτιές στην Πάρνηθα, τη Λάρισα και τη Μαγνησία. Ο κ. Πολύδωρας μίλησε για σχετική επιτυχία και εξέφρασε τις ευχαριστίες του στις δυνάμεις πυρόσβεσης και αρνήθηκε ότι υπήρξε καθυστέρηση στην επέμβαση του κρατικού μηχανισμού.

Κατά τον υπουργό, οι φωτιές οφείλονται κατά κύριο λόγο στα πρωτοφανή καιρικά φαινόμενα, αλλά άφησε ανοιχτό το ενδεχόμενο εμπρησμού, λέγοντας, όμως, ότι αυτό δεν είναι της παρούσης.

Ο κ. Πολύδωρας μίλησε για καλό συντονισμό μεταξύ των συναρμόδιων υπουργείων και καλή προετοιμασία που έδειξε αποτελέσματα, ενώ παραδέχθηκε ότι στη φωτιά στα Δερβενοχώρια τα αεροσκάφη δεν προχώρησαν σε ρίψεις νερού για να μην πέσουν νερά στους πυλώνες της ΔΕΗ και δημιουργηθούν περαιτέρω προβλήματα.Η διαπίστωση ότι τα πυροσβεστικά δεν πέταξαν εγκαίρως, την οποία επιβεβαίωσε ο Βύρων Πολύδωρας προκάλεσε ερωτηματικά. "Τα εναέρια μέσα είναι ο μόνος τρόπος για να σβηστούν τέτοιες φωτιές", δήλωσε στον ΑΝΤ1 ο επικεφαλής ειδικής ομάδας του Ομίλου Φίλων του Δάσους Γιάννης Χαρμπίλας.

Η χώρα περνάει μια δύσκολη μέρα, δήλωσε στη Βουλή η Ντόρα Μπακογιάννη, ενώ σημείωσε ότι πρωθυπουργός και κυβέρνηση κάνουν ό,τι είναι ανθρωπίνως δυνατόν με τα μέσα που διαθέτει η χώρα για να σώσει ό,τι μπορεί να σωθεί.

Fires in Greece

Our house is surrounded on 3 sides by a pine forest. It is a 10 minute walk from the centre of our town but this little dasaki cannot be touched because the city council planted the trees 40 years ago.

The blocks of land that were cultivated were not planted with pine trees and that's how we bought our block of land (I wanted to say that in case anyone thinks that we have an illegal block of land and no building permit).


Every year I telephone the city council and ask that the pine needles be cleaned and the dead branches cut. Every year the council sends a team of men or women and they spend at least a month cleaning perhaps 20 stremmata of pine forest. We clean the pine forest around our house ourselves.

The pine forest floor stays clean for perhaps 1 month and then people start messing it up again - Bags of rubbish that aren't put into the proper containers are ripped apart by dogs during the night - anyone who cleans their garden apparently thinks the pine forest is a good dumping ground . I have even seen old furniture and mattresses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's how we Greeks look after our forests.

The city council has another way - apart from these cleaning teams (if you can call them that) it does absolutely NOTHING. Forest care is supposed to include cutting dry branches, thinning out the trees and, as in the past, having a forest guard on the lookout.

We personally have put out 4-5 small fires during the last 20 years.

An example of the fire department's readiness for the job : A couple of years ago my son came home after 1 in the morning and because his clothes smelt of cigarette smoke from the place he was at, he decided to change in the back sun verandah we have. He didn't turn on the lights and that's the only reason he was able to see a small fire that had started about 20 meters from the back of our house. He immediately woke us up and he and his father climbed over a wire fence and put out the fire. In the meantime I telephoned the fire department. They came very quickly and just to make sure that the fire was out they wanted to hose the area down. Impossible! Their fire hose couldn't reach the area from the road which was less than 40 meters away. They tried from the church just above this place and again were unsuccessful! So it was pure luck from start to finish that we weren't burnt alive - and this fire could only have been started deliberately by someone because it was in the middle of the night.

The city council have frequently told me that they have received no money from the Government in Athens for fire protection because these workers (the ones who are employed for "forest protection" )
are "ektakti" - seasonal workers.

There is absolutely no fire prevention preparation by the Greek government. Everything is left to chance as it always is for everything.

Just one more thing to illustrate the absolute insanity of the public sector in this country :

This concerns the cleaning teams that come and clean the pine forest and who are not supervised. Only once have I ever seen someone come and watch what they were doing!

The team of women clean properly and work well. For the last two years though (this year no-one has come at all) a team of men have come.....

their industrious routine :

they come at 7.30 a.m. They start work at about 9 a.m. after their smokes and coffe and whatever else they have. They work for 1/2 an hour and then rest on the ground for 2 hours. This continues until they finish work at about 2 p.m. They also leave their litter from their "little" breaks all over the ground............... Oh, and one of them brings his chair from home so that he doesn't have to lie on the ground because he's so overweight that he has difficulty getting up again.

Πύρινο εφιάλτη χωρίς τέλος ζει η Ελλάδα. Μέσα σε ελάχιστες ώρες τουλάχιστον δεκαεπτά άνθρωποι κάηκαν, δύο αγνοούνται, ενώ εκφράζονται φόβοι ότι ο αριθμός των θυμάτων είναι μεγαλύτερος. Χωριά ολόκληρα έσβησαν από τον χάρτη στη Ζαχάρω, πόλεις και κοινότητες εκκενώθηκαν, χιλιάδες στρέμματα δάσους, καλλιέργειες και περιουσίες παραδόθηκαν στον εφιάλτη της φωτιάς.
Κι όμως, και στο νέο ντόμινο των καταστροφικών πυρκαγιών η κρατική μηχανή αποδείχθηκε θεατής. Η Πυροσβεστική σήκωσε και πάλι τα χέρια ψηλά, τρέχοντας πίσω από τις φωτιές που ξεσπούσαν η μία μετά την άλλη, την ώρα που οι κάτοικοι πολλών περιοχών καταγγέλλουν ότι είτε δεν είδαν ποτέ πυροσβεστικά οχήματα είτε τα είδαν να φθάνουν χωρίς αντλίες και νερό.
Οι δυνατοί βοριάδες που έπνεαν σε όλη την Πελοπόννησο με ένταση που έφθανε και τα οκτώ Μπωφόρ καθήλωσαν επί ώρες χθες το πρωί τα πυροσβεστικά αεροσκάφη, με αποτέλεσμα να χαθεί η μάχη στα τρία μεγάλα μέτωπα: στον Ταΰγετο, στον Πάρνωνα στη Λακωνία και στην Αρεόπολη. Αυτή η φωτιά ξέσπασε λίγο πριν από τις δέκα το πρωί και τύλιξε όλη την περιοχή από το Νέο Οίτυλο έως την Αρεόπολη μέσα σε ελάχιστο χρόνο. Έξι άνθρωποι εγκλωβίστηκαν αβοήθητοι στις φλόγες και έχασαν τη ζωή τους. Η πόλη της Αρεόπολης εκκενώθηκε, σπίτια κάηκαν, ενώ κάτοικοι και επισκέπτες έψαχναν για καταφύγιο κοντά στη θάλασσα. Ολόκληρα χωριά εκκενώθηκαν στη Λακωνία, τη Μεσσηνία και αργά το μεσημέρι και στη Φθιώτιδα, στην περιοχή του Δομοκού, όπου το χωριό Ασβέστι κάηκε.
Μόνο 42 πυροσβέστες. Στον Ταΰγετο, μόλις σαράντα δύο πυροσβέστες έμειναν για να αντιμετωπίσουν τη μεγάλη πυρκαγιά προχθές το βράδυ, όταν έπεσε η νύχτα και σταμάτησαν να πετούν τα πυροσβεστικά αεροπλάνα. Το αποτέλεσμα ήταν η φωτιά να ξεφύγει από κάθε έλεγχο, κάνοντας στάχτη δάσος με μαύρο πεύκο και έλατο σε έναν από τους σημαντικότερους πνεύμονες της Πελοποννήσου. Τα ξημερώματα άρχισαν να μετακινούνται πυροσβεστικές δυνάμεις από όλη την Πελοπόννησο προς τα δύο μέτωπα, αφού η ελπίδα ότι θα μπορούσαν να ελεγχθούν με τη βοήθεια των αεροσκαφών απέβη μάταιη:
Τόσο στη Μεσσηνία όσο και στη Λακωνία φυσούσαν βοριάδες έντασης έως και οκτώ Μπωφόρ, με αποτέλεσμα τα τέσσερα αεροσκάφη (δύο στον Ταΰγετο και άλλα δύο στον Πάρνωνα) να αποχωρήσουν μετά τις πρώτες ρίψεις νερού. Στην μάχη να ελεγχθούν οι φωτιές παρέμεναν εκτός από τις επίγειες δυνάμεις συνολικά έξι ελικόπτερα.
Μέσα στο σκηνικό του χάους που είχαν δημιουργήσει στη Νότια Πελοπόννησο οι δύο φωτιές στον Ταΰγετο και τον Πάρνωνα, η τρίτη πυρκαγιά που ξέσπασε χθες λίγο πριν από τις δέκα το πρωί στη Μάνη βρήκε τελείως αποδυναμωμένη την Πυροσβεστική για να την αντιμετωπίσει εγκαίρως. Μεταξύ Λακωνίας και Μεσσηνίας η κυκλοφορία διακόπηκε, αφού οι φλόγες έκλεισαν την Εθνική Οδό Καλαμάτας- Σπάρτης που περνά μέσα από τον Ταΰγετο. Λίγες ώρες αργότερα λόγω της μεγάλης φωτιάς στη Ζαχάρω έκλεισε και η Εθνική Οδός Πάτρας- Καλαμάτας στο ύψος του Καϊάφα.
Κάηκαν σπίτια. Οι φλόγες τύλιξαν τον Δήμο Αρεόπολης και έως αργά χθες είχαν καταστραφεί σπίτια και ξενοδοχεία, ενώ οι πυροσβέστες προσπαθούσαν να δημιουργήσουν αντιπυρική ζώνη γύρω από μεγάλα πρατήρια καυσίμων στην είσοδο της πόλης από το Νέο Οίτυλο. Κάτοικοι και επισκέπτες έφευγαν όπως όπως αναζητώντας καταφύγιο κοντά στη θάλασσα.
Στην προσπάθεια των πυροσβεστών να σωθεί η Αρεόπολη, οι γύρω περιοχές παραδόθηκαν στις φλόγες και οι κάτοικοι από το Οίτυλο έως το Διρό προσπαθούσαν μόνοι τους να σώσουν σπίτια και περιουσίες με όσα μέσα διέθεταν. Σημειώνεται ότι πριν από έναν χρόνο η Μάνη είχε χτυπηθεί και πάλι από τον πύρινο εφιάλτη και η τοπική οικονομία δεν έχει συνέλθει από το ισχυρό πλήγμα που είχε δεχθεί τότε, καθώς έγιναν στάχτη πάνω από 100.000 στρέμματα με ελιές.

«Ποιος ξέρει τι θα αντικρύσουμε όταν καταφέρουμε να μπούμε στα χωριά...». Τουλάχιστον δέκα άνθρωποι βρέθηκαν νεκροί στο Μάκιστο Ζαχάρως, όλοι όμως φοβούνται για το χειρότερο.
Έως αργά χθες κανένας δεν μπορούσε να προσεγγίσει τα πέντε χωριά της περιοχής, τα οποία εξαφανίστηκαν από τον χάρτη, για να διαπιστωθεί αν οι κάτοικοι και οι εκατοντάδες αυτή την περίοδο επισκέπτες τους είχαν καταφέρει να απομακρυνθούν με ασφάλεια. Ακόμη ένας άνθρωπος έχασε τη ζωή του στην άλλη μεγάλη πυρκαγιά της Ηλείας, στην περιοχή Λάτα Αμαλιάδας, που έχει υποστεί τεράστιες καταστροφές. «Βλέπω καμένους ανθρώπους μπροστά μου, μέσα στα αυτοκίνητά τους...» περιέγραφε χθες το απόγευμα σε κατάσταση σοκ ο αστυνομικός διευθυντής Ηλείας κ. Σωτ. Χρονόπουλος. Τρεις δασοπυροσβέστες είναι ανάμεσα στους νεκρούς της Ζαχάρως και τουλάχιστον άλλοι οκτώ άνθρωποι εγκλωβίστηκαν από τις φλόγες μέσα στα αυτοκίνητά τους ενώ προσπαθούσαν να εγκαταλείψουν τα χωριά τους για να σωθούν.
Περισσότεροι από πενήντα άνθρωποι μεταφέρθηκαν με εγκαύματα και αναπνευστικά προβλήματα στα νοσοκομεία, ενώ δύο ακόμη αγνοούνται.
Μέσα σε δύο ώρες. Όλα έγιναν σε διάστημα μικρότερο των δύο ωρών: χάθηκαν ζωές και κάηκαν χωριά από τη φωτιά, που εξαπλωνόταν με απίστευτη ταχύτητα λόγω των ισχυρών ανέμων σε όλο το ορεινό τμήμα του Δήμου Ζαχάρως. Η φωτιά ξέσπασε στο χωριό Σέκουλα. Λίγο πριν από τις οκτώ το βράδυ οι φλόγες έκαιγαν το μοναδικής ομορφιάς πευκοδάσος του Καϊάφα. Την τελευταία στιγμή με βάρκες απομακρύνθηκαν από τις εγκαταστάσεις των ιαματικών λουτρών της λίμνης του Καϊάφα δεκάδες ηλικιωμένοι όταν οι φωτιές κύκλωσαν την περιοχή. Αργά χθες οι φλόγες είχαν φθάσει στα πρώτα σπίτια της πόλης της Ζαχάρως ενώ εκινούντο και προς το Σαμικό και τη Στροφιλιά. Οι κάτοικοι καταγγέλλουν ότι έμειναν αβοήθητοι. «Δεν έχουμε ένα πυροσβεστικό για να προστατέψουμε τα σπίτια μας» είπε ο δήμαρχος κ. Πανταζής Χρονόπουλος, που εκτίμησε ότι το μέτωπο της πυρκαγιάς εκτεινόταν σε τουλάχιστον είκοσι χιλιόμετρα, δημιουργώντας κλοιό γύρω από τη Ζαχάρω. Χωριά γεμάτα ζωή, χτισμένα μέσα σε πευκοδάσος και ελαιώνες όπως το Ξηροκάμπι, η Σμέρνα, η Μάκιστος, τα Κουμουθαίικα, η Αρήνη, η Καλίδονα, η Καλλιθέα είναι πλέον αποκαΐδια. Ένα άλλο μέτωπο τα μεσάνυχτα έφθασε στις παρυφές της Αμαλιάδας.
Φωτιές όλη τη νύχτα. Νέες πυρκαγιές ξέσπασαν γύρω στα μεσάνυχτα στις Αρχαίες Κλεωνές και τη Νεμέα Κορινθίας καθώς και στον Θέρμο Αιτολωακαρνανίας. Επίσης, εκκενώθηκαν τα Στύρα Ευβοίας, κάηκαν σπίτια στα χωριά Κεφαλά και Χρύσαφα στον Πάρνωνα, ενώ σχεδιαζόταν τη νύχτα η εκκένωση του Βρονταμά Λακωνίας, καθώς και της Αλαγονίας και Αρτεμισίας στον Ταΰγετο.

Greek emergency workers continue to find the charred bodies of people burned to death by forest fires that are raging in the south of the country.

Officials raised the death toll to 41 at around midday on Saturday, but said they feared it would climb higher.

Searches of burned cars, houses and field were still turning up the remains of those who had been unable to escape.

The prime minister called the situation "an unspeakable tragedy" and the government appealed to the EU for help.

Greek newspapers are calling the southern Peloponnese region a "crematorium", says the BBC's Malcolm Brabant in Athens.

The fires have been moving so fast that people have been cut off before they could escape. With emergency services overstretched, desperate residents and local officials called television and radio stations to appeal for help.

There were estimated to be more than 170 fires raging across the country, and a state of emergency was declared in the provinces of Lakonia and Messinia.

Friday was the deadliest day of a terrible summer of forest fires, a war of attrition against the flames that has now been raging for two months, our correspondent says.

At least nine people are reported to have burned to death in their cars as they attempted to flee the flames near the town of Zahero, west of the Peloponnese.

The Associated Press reported that a car had crashed into a fire engine, causing a traffic jam from which people could not escape as the flames advanced.

Zahero seemed to be the centre of the tragedy. Fire crews said they had found at least 30 bodies in villages near the town, as they searched burned out cars and houses.

Among the dead were believed to be a mother and her four children who had been reported missing, and three firefighters.

A local prefect close to the scene described it as horrific.

"The situation is extremely dire... The speed with which this fire has been spreading is astonishing," said the mayor of Zahero, Pantazis Chronopoulos.

Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis visited Zahero late on Friday, and told reporters: "We are living through an unspeakable tragedy today."
Six deaths were confirmed in the seaside town of Areopolis in the Mani region of Greece's deep south. Hotels and several villages have been evacuated, fire officials said.


'Incredible efforts'

But hot, dry winds were expected to continue through Saturday, gusting up to gale force and fanning the flames.

The winds hampered the use of fire-fighting planes.
Some helicopters have managed to take flight and their crews have been praised for heroism in the most difficult conditions.

"The helicopters are operating whenever the weather conditions permit...

The pilots are making incredible efforts," fire department spokesman Nikos Diamandis said.

The overstretched fire services are being helped by the military, but our correspondent says troops do not seem trained or equipped for the task, and are no match for the intense flames.

Acting Interior Minister Spyros Flogaitis called on EU countries "to send any help they can".

A hot, dry summer, with temperatures recently touching 40C (104F) has left much of the country vulnerable. On the island of Evia, north of the capital, three villages were evacuated as a fire approached.

"If we don't stop this now there will be nothing left," said Sofia Moutsou, mayor of the town of Styra

Our correspondent says the large number of deaths has transformed what had previously been seen as a predominantly ecological disaster.

There has been widespread public anger at the government's response, which many have criticised as inadequate and slow. Mr Karamanlis is under considerable political pressure, as he faces an early general election in three weeks' time.

There are fears for the ancient ruins of Olympia, a world heritage site and home to the first Olympics, as Greece's devastating forest fires close in.

Water-bombing planes are trying to suppress the flames near the site, and nearby villages have been evacuated.

More than 50 people have died since fires burst out on Friday. They are still burning and nearing villages in the south, on islands and near Athens.
The Greek PM has implied that many fires were started deliberately.
In a nationally televised address, Costas Karamanlis said: "So many fires breaking out simultaneously in so many parts of the country cannot be a coincidence.

A 65-year-old man has been charged with arson and murder relating to a fire which killed six people in Areopolis, in the far south of Greece.
Two youths were also detained on suspicion of arson in the northern city of Kavala.

Mr Karamanlis has declared a nationwide state of emergency and said the country had to "mobilise all means and forces to face this disaster".


Caught unawares

"Fires are burning in more than half the country," fire department spokesman Nikos Diamandis said

"This is definitely an unprecedented disaster for Greece."

The fire services said dozens of new fires had sprung up on Saturday, and a Nasa satellite picture showed numerous plumes of smoke, many in the west of the Peloponnesian peninsula.

"We're going to burn alive here," one woman told Greek television from the village of Lambeti, near the site of ancient Olympia.

She was echoing the fears of many Greeks, who heard horrifying news reports throughout Saturday of people being trapped by walls of flame.
The rapidly advancing fires caught many people unawares. Those who left the decision to flee too late were caught in their houses, cars, or as they stumbled through olive groves.

Late on Saturday church bells rang out in the village of Kolyri near Olympia, warning residents to get out as soon as possible.

At least 39 people were reported to have been killed in the worst affected region, around the town of Zaharo in the western Peloponnese, by a fire that broke out on Friday and quickly spread. Another four bodies were discovered in the central Peloponnese region of Arcadia.

Towns on the island of Evia were being evacuated on Sunday, with ferries carrying people to the mainland near Athens.

"The fire is racing towards the town," a resident of the island town of Aliveri told Greek TV.

"We are leaving or else we will burn to death. There is no one to help us," he said.

Meanwhile Athens itself was shrouded in smoke that obscured the sun as several fires threatened the city's outskirts.

Houses and industrial buildings in the suburbs of Keratea and Kalyvia were destroyed.

"This is complete hell," said Kalyvia mayor Petros Filippou.

"The front is 30km (19 miles) long and has now reached the first houses. That's it."

'I feel anger'

Among many tragic stories to emerge, one that shocked many Greeks was that of a mother who burned to death with her four children. They died clutching each other.

"I feel deep grief for our dead," Prime Minister Karamanlis said in his address.

"I feel deep pain for the mother who perished in the flames with her arms round her children. I feel anger - the same that you feel."

The heatwave that has left much of Greece's countryside so vulnerable to fire was set to continue on Sunday. Winds were expected to be lower than in previous days, but still sufficient to fan the flames. Hundreds of firefighters are attempting to dampen the flames, with assistance from hundreds of soldiers. EU countries responded to Greece's appeal for help, with France, Spain and Italy sending firefighting aircraft. Others sent helicopters, fire engines or firefighters.
