Hi all,

I want to gather as much as possible info on ancient Phoinike(in todays southern Albania) I will visit that area soon , and want to know as much as possible about the Epirotic league and Epirotic despotat, and about the history of that once great city in Epirus.

A internet search for Phoinike did not help much, so anyone with some info is much appreciated.

According to an inscription its called Phoinika (ÖïéÃ*ßêá Gr) (SEG 23.189.1.12)

Polybius calls it a city in 2.5.5 and 2.8.4 and there is also an inscription of Dodone who calls it a 'Chaonian city' (ðüëéò ×áüÃ*ùÃ*) . It seems the city was the political centre of the Chaonians from the 4th c. Their patron goddess was Athena Polias.

Some inhabitants of the city were theodorokoi in a list of an inscription found in Argos. I think the remainders of the city in modern south Albania is a small walled acropolis, probably dating back on 5th century but there is almost no info about archaeology of south Albania generally in the net.
