From greek newspaper 'Kathimerini'. The mural dates from 1568 and anyone can see it in Moni Docheiareiou in Mt. Athos. The monastery of Docheiareiou appears to date back to the early years of the eleventh century.
From one side it says 'Alexander King of the Hellenes' and from the other 'Augustus King of the Romans'

Yeah, imagine the kind of monk, living under Ottoman rule (though athos had some autonomy) who had the brains and the knowledge to differentiate Alexander as king of the Hellenes (as was his historical title) from a Byzantine Empire who was king of the Romaioi (as was his historical title)!
I remember a folk song I think it was or a puppet show which featured Alexander saying "I was born a Christian, and will die a Christian"
Many monks, as this shows however, though were well educated and carried with them extensive knowledge of the classics, even under Turkish yoke. thats why they managed to contribute so much to the rennaisance in italy

I've heard about this one before! I was willing to go and take a footage of it someday, so thanks for saving me time
By the way...In mount Athos there is endless material about Macedonian history...When I was there 1996 i visited their libraries.
