In pre-Exarchist times, there were dosens of Serbian schools situated mostly in the North and Western part of the present-day country.
In 1858, Jordan Hadzi-Konstantinov Djinot, who sometimes showed a Serbian identity, asked the government (Popechitelystvo) of Law and Enlightment in Belgrade "to make gifts to our places so that we can study our Serbian antiquties".
In Prilep in 1867 where there were already a Bulgarian and Serbian school in existence) "citziens of the discrict of Prilep" beg so that Serbian goverment recieve,Vasiliye Popovich,a pupil, so that he can listen to the "greater sciencies in Serbian language" because "our disctrict has a desire for Serbian science, so that it can establish local schools according to the Serbian language"
