View Full Version : Contrevarsy Of 300 (the movie) Lakonian 03-04-2007, 04:23 AM Hello again, this is a preety interesting subject. I have noticed lately a large buzz over this movie, and mainly a negative one. Theres alot of people who are already offended by the artistic approach of this movie, but yet it seems to me they have no real argument.
Im talking about the racial impact it has had on alot of people who have had the chance to take a glimpse of the trailer. Posts are feeling with hate threads , and history is been re written in there claims by realy no logic at all.
Some of these claims are as follows:
1-Modern day Jews are made of Greeks because they to raise there heads against the Middle East.
2-The movie is posing as white man shwoing a black man how its done.
3-Historicaly inaccurate with riddiculous claims such as Leonidas actualy kneeling at the feet of Xerxes.
My answeres are as follows:
1- This is absolute crap, Jews and Hellenes are like comparing night to day and besides, Xerxes was like god to the Jews, and im preety sure in his line of so called warriors there were many Jews coming to inslave little Hellas.and also his wife Esther was a Jew!.
2- Yawn....broken record.
3-LOL thats a funny one.
Im sick and tired of all the negative potrail our history is been given, are those idiots forgeting they attacked us for hundreds of years.....and failed!
From there Cyrus all they way to there biggest failure Darius III.
Xerxes wife prefered her slaves to be Greek rather then anything else.
Most of all the Persian army where not made up of just "Persians", and most of all who fought for those barbarians where dark skinned, Indians, Egyptians, Africans, etc why is that so unbelievable? What they were realy white and the Greeks were black?
It seems to me this movie is going to leave a bad taste in peoples mouths and critics are going to love it!
Im going to watch it with great pride, although its not historicaly accurate in many scenes it still captures a part of our history, and it was no myth! I have seen many clips, and i think it looks more Greek than TROY. Its art more than anything. PhiliptheUniterchaeronea 03-04-2007, 02:14 PM Completely lame. When you are on top, people want to knock you down, and hard. Tsontos 03-04-2007, 04:03 PM the movie shows leonidas kneeling at xerxes' feet? Spartan 03-04-2007, 06:21 PM The movie is not a documentary and never claims to be. One must remember that it is completely based on a visual graphic comic book. The emphasis is on the visual. The main thing is to remember the basis of the story. FREEDOM.
Don't think of it as a telling of history, think of it as pure entertainment. The same thing happened with Troy. It was so historically innacurrate but it was a good movie overall. Now Alexander was just a bad movie with many historical innacuracies. Lakonian 03-05-2007, 03:17 AM the movie shows leonidas kneeling at xerxes' feet?
Sorry i should of been abit more deatiled here, some Persian(Irani) was boasting that theres an ancient tablet in Iran that has written on it " King Leonidas nelt before the God King"...i have never heard of it before and if its true, its rubbish!
But and please do not read further becuse im about to qoute a spoiler here.....there is a scene in teh end when a persians screams to leonidas to kneel one last time, he does and he asked to throw his sword and shield and he does that aswell.
But as he goes to kneel, a spartan leaps and steps off his back and drives a spear staright through the Persian...although its preety cool, i think this scene will dissapoint me because a Spartan never releases his shield, not even for this "Matrix" style move the movie has basically taken away a main principal of the Spartans.
Anyway, im certainly not put off this amazingly made film, its still our history! Ehetlaios 03-05-2007, 04:58 AM the movie shows leonidas kneeling at xerxes' feet?

Unfair movie! Who do you call barbarian
The movie is very unfair about the Persian civilization! Look at Persian Empire in brief: What is the defenition of a civilized nation!
"Persia became an empire under the Cyrus the Great, who created a policy of religious and cultural tolerance that became the hallmark of Persian rule. Engineering feats include an innovative system of water management; a cross-continent paved roadway stretching 1500 miles; a canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea; and the creation of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Mausoleum of Maussollos." (from the History Channel)
Who are Evils? You should be ignorant to call Persians barbers and evils;
the land that housed the birth of human rights, cultural and religion tolerance, complex civilizations and in fact monotheism.
1- Persians were the first nation practiced religious and cultural tolerance (read Bible-ex. Book of Ezra) although they were the first nation who accepts monotheism ( Monotheism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monotheism#)... ).
2- Persian issued what is now called the world's first Human Rights and Freedom declaration ( Cyrus Cylin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrus_Cylin)...)
3- Engineering of the first complex and diverse civilization
These are heritages of the Persian Empire.

The funniest part about these threads is that they all think its about Iraq/Iran and Islam..
The review I saw on Ant1 suggested the exact opposite, the Spartans speak British english while the Persians speak American english.
So its a clear symbolization of US imperialistic policies through the Persian attack on Hellas and has nothing to do with Iraq, nukes..etc. Tsontos 03-06-2007, 06:39 AM from all reviews this movie is quality. for once i wil just sit back and enjoy. who cares about these complexed people. the movie is alreayd out! :) olvios 03-06-2007, 03:19 PM I saw a trailer in youtube and they have added more imaginary stuff to it going beyond the comic .they have some sort of mutant giant !!! with blades as hands and something like that.I dont know what can i say. olvios 03-06-2007, 03:21 PM Its time that we the Greeks and not the state started making historical accurate movies and documentaries about our ancestors. We have thinking in the agema to make a documentary in the future about hoplites of all Greek kingdoms.Epirus,Macedonia,Ionia....and the colonies. Lakonian 03-06-2007, 03:44 PM Guys lets not get to negative about this oicture ourselves, please keep in mind its a movie, and its has been created by a comic artist, its more art than anything. The monster like creature you speak of Olvios is just an image of a man who has been inslaved by the persians and it sort of puts a twist of what an inslaved man feels and looks like, inside out.
Whipped and disfigured humans are no myth in those barbaric tribes( the persians) as or own historian Herodutos reminds us, when the first line of Persians were approaching the Spartans they where egged on and whipped by the second line.
As for the fat creature with blades for hands i think this is sort dipslaying the power the Persians brought against little Greece, sort of exotic creatures that the Greeks only spun in myths, you must remember film is art .....i am proud that they have made this film, its stil shows what real men were (Greeks) and what freedom means to us all! statue of King Leonidas of ancient Sparta towers over the stadium of the modern city in the southern Peloponnese, yesterday. Sparta yesterday hosted a special premiere of ‘300,’ the new Hollywood epic chronicling the last stand of Leonidas and his 300 warriors against massive Persian forces in the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. The movie premieres in Greek cinemas today.

I HAVE JUST SEEN THE MOVIE
I think it is an excellent movie. It respects the whole idea of Sparta, the Battle of Thermopylae (480 B.C.), and the differences between European and Asian cultures and most of all mentality. Although it is not a documentary it respects both the comic (that I have also read), history and the bravery of the 300 Spartans.
I am really surprised by the fact that everyone is discussing for minor things (the skin colour of the Persians, the way Xerxes appears in the film, the existence of rhinos and monsters in the Persian army) and no one says anything about the real message of the movie, that is the sacrifice of life in order to protect freedom. The difference of mentality between Europeans (free will, democracy etc) and Asians who easily accept an Emperor as their absolute ruler, or an arrogant behaviour by "the state". Such differences existed even in religion. In ancient Greek religion Gods were almost equal to men, while in most Asian cultures Gods were absolute tyrrans.
In the film Xerxes the persian emperor is not depicted as an evil man, but as a man who thinks that is God.
I do not think that this movie insults any Iranian. After all the story is true and in 480 B.C. the Persian Empire (the SUPER POWER of the era) really tried to conquer the free Greek city states. I am Greek but I do not feel insulted by the true fact that certain Greeks were spoiled by Persian money or by the fact(?) that the Spartans in the film are shown to execute wounded Persians.
The film sends so many moral messages (love for freedom and country, be brave, accept the laws by free will and not because you are afraid the police, resist tyrrany, put your moral values above your life etc.) that it seems stupid to discuss about the costumes, the weapons or the colour of the skin)
If I were Persian (Iranian) I would love this film for these messages. Ehetlaios 03-09-2007, 11:05 AM It's 6:11, I decided to go and see it tonight.

Share your opinion of the movie with us brother. Does it show what Greeks where made of, and how we stood against slavery!
Does the movie have emotion?
Does it show the audience how Greeks believed in freedom and when you walk out of the theatre you hold your head high for knowing what your ancestors did for you and the world? Ehetlaios 03-11-2007, 03:36 AM The movie kicked ass. It was better than I expected, followed the comic closely but also had it's own scenes.
What I did not like was
1) The scene with the ephors even though it's in the comic, was not needed.
2) The persians, all persians. The immortals are lepers (?), many monsters fighting for the persian army etc. I understand that it's because of the comic and monsters are used in cinema for bombastic reasons but the persians were kinda lame.
3) The scene were Ephialtes is shown in the persian camp, before kneeling to Xerxes, is one of the worst scenes I have seen in a movie.
Other than that, the basic storyline is true. The battle scenes are true, the spartans are not showed as gay people who await the persian envoy with their pants down, etc.
Overall it's a great movie.

Right on brother. Ah, Hollywood loves to twist our history, it has done it in every movie. There Roman lovers, as a matter of fact, there whole constitution is built on Roman ideals. I have read it. Same for all the anglo saxons. They built there fancy little colleges as if they constitute Greek ideals with letters to symbolise there groups. They prase Greek morals , democracy art, science, they name many areas of our Greek states.
Yet they show no respect on a historical level....Macedonia, Turkey Albania...etc.But at the end of the day, the movie is art, dont loose the point of it, freedom, and fought to the last braeth...by our men....Greeks Nikas 03-13-2007, 02:10 AM Very entertaining movie. While lacking in the broader historical background and quite hyperbolic when it came to the Persian "monsters", where it does succeed quite nicely is in catching the Spartan ethos, the "essence" of their society. I was actually impressed by the number of direct ancient quotes in the film:
"Come and get them"
"With your shield or on it"
"because only Spartan women give birth to real men"
"Eat a hearty breakfast boys, because tonight we dine in hell"
"then we shall fight in the shade"
"it seems like we (Sparta) have more soldiers"

Good post my friend. your words are very wise. But i must tell you elephants were never there at thr battle, people being whipped and looking all fancy most definately where there. and yes to the witness who disclosed the batle to our historian forefathers would have been described in an extrem manner but with facts. Obviously the Persians where extreme in there dress code and there look, with make up and fancy hair etc.
As for there brutality, well everyone who reads history in here would know in Alexanders campaign when he arrived in Persia he witnessed the slashed and mutilated faces of the Greek slaves who where there, and he freed them all and locked up the palace with Persian woman children and men and set it on fire. Some would see this extreme, and Alexander had great shame for hat he did but he wheeped for he Greeks who had there faces mutilated.
My love for my ancestors and pride and suppression they inflicted on the Persians will for ever be a celebration to me.
And a movie comes along and shows excatly the characters that these two nations had, and the so called Persians have a cry.
Wake up Iranians, Persia is no more, the muslim campaigns made sure of this, not us Greeks.
They scream that this movie is racial, haha, do you read about your own history? Its seems you envy the Greeks the most! Your constant attempts to inslave our ancestors where proof enough how your characters would have been.
Frank Miller and Zack Snyder have painetd a picture perfect of what the Greeks saw you as, and what everyone else would at that time!
The Persians might have had tolerance for those they conqoured, ( with terms and conditions which usualy resulted in death) it didnt give aright for them to come to Greece and demand land and water because little Xerxes thought he was a Demi God.
Have you ever thought about why nations loved Alexandros even though he was a conqourer? Because he freed not inslaved!! Lakonian 03-14-2007, 06:23 AM Guys you have to watch this video. This is how far the silly Iranisn have taken this movie? Somebody slap this guy for me.
YouTube - Official Rant: Persianguyagain unleashed (300 is racist) Phoebus 03-14-2007, 07:12 AM Hello all,
Since I cannot post links to websites (ach, those 15 posts.....), I copied and pasted this article on Iranian reaction to the movie:
TEHRAN, Iran - The hit American movie “300” has angered Iranians who say the Greeks-vs-Persians action flick insults their ancient culture and provokes animosity against Iran.
“Hollywood declares war on Iranians,” blared a headline in Tuesday’s edition of the independent Ayende-No newspaper.
The movie, which raked in $70 million in its opening weekend, is based on a comic-book fantasy version of the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., in which a force of 300 Spartans held off a massive Persian army at a mountain pass in Greece for three days.
Even some American reviewers noted the political overtones of the West-against-Iran story line — and the way Persians are depicted as decadent, sexually flamboyant and evil in contrast to the noble Greeks.
In Iran, the movie hasn’t opened and probably never will, given the government’s restrictions on Western films, though one paper said bootleg DVDs were already available.
Still, it touched a sensitive nerve. Javad Shamghadri, cultural adviser to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said the United States tries to “humiliate” Iran in order to reverse historical reality and “compensate for its wrongdoings in order to provoke American soldiers and warmongers” against Iran.
The movie comes at a time of increased tensions between the United States and Iran over the Persian nation’s nuclear program and the Iraq war.
But aside from politics, the film was seen as an attack on Persian history, a source of pride for Iranians across the political spectrum, including critics of the current Islamic regime.
State-run television has run several commentaries the past two days calling the film insulting and has brought on Iranian film directors to point out its historical inaccuracies.
“The film depicts Iranians as demons, without culture, feeling or humanity, who think of nothing except attacking other nations and killing people,” Ayende-No said in its article Tuesday.
“It is a new effort to slander the Iranian people and civilization before world public opinion at a time of increasing American threats against Iran,” it said.
Iran’s biggest circulation newspaper, Hamshahri, said “300” is “serving the policy of the U.S. leadership” and predicted it will “prompt a wave of protest in the world. ... Iranians living in the U.S. and Europe will not be indifferent about this obvious insult.” olvios 03-14-2007, 07:37 AM Nomatter how you see it the Iranians are right to be pissed as we were angry at oliver stones Alenxander the Great fag. Phoebus 03-14-2007, 07:41 AM There are several things I would like to say about all this. The outrage caused by the movie is simply unfounded. As most of us now know (even Iranians), the movie is based on an epic and graphic comics. It is not the first time, if I remember, that Hollywood adapts a comics into a movie. If the movie causes so much outrage, then why did the comic go unnoticed? Why did the book not stir any anger?
Today, we live in a world of "politically correct," where racial discrimination is seen everywhere. Then, as things go on, we will not even be able to make movies depicting wars between Europeans and others, because they will be immediatly interpreted as "the white man" against "the other." And if we made a movie depicting Europeans, or Greeks as the barbarians, what would we say? I am sure several people here in the West would see it as a "mea culpa for our faults." Are we Westerners now so ashamed of our own history? Yes, we have been guilty of many faults. Is that a reason for self-affliction? Where is our pride? Sincere apologies do not mean lowering ousrselves.
This issue reminds me of the Da Vinci Code. The book and movie came under the spotlights only after a cardinal brought the issue forth, two years or so after the book was published. Iranians are proud of their history and culture, this is a good thing. We westerners should sometimes have the same attitude. Pride does not mean rejecting the other. If some cannot even understand that, then they should not bother speaking up. As for the movie, it is no real issue, for it is mere entertainment, and Iranians are wrong in interpreting it as another "western anti-Iranian propanganda." Would there be a movie issue without the current nuclear issue?
Nothing in the movie is "anti-Iranian," and there is no racial discrimination. This movie is not a conspiracy, and it is not like a law prohibiting headscarves in public schools....
Phoebus. Tsontos 03-14-2007, 07:43 AM its pretty hard to portray Xerxes and his army in a good light isnt it? It was them who tried to invade tiny Greece without cause and was embaressed first at Thermopylea and then again at Salamis and Platea by other greeks. before salamis they burned athens as well. olvios 03-14-2007, 08:33 AM They were actually trying to conquer the wolrd not just Greece they invaded in italy as well and there we had the battle of IMERA olvios 03-14-2007, 08:48 AM They should have done gates of fire by pretsfield. The current politics between US and Iran are bad enough. The movie definitely makes it worse, but let's face it: Monster or not, they would be pissed.

Some of you say in here that its just like when Alexnader came out when they show he is gay?...Its nothing like that my friends, this movie is not abscuring the fact that this war happenned, it might twist the fashion and the look, but not the attitude of those men, both Spartan and Persians.
someone who rules the other by military force is nnoble, Alexnadrs campaign was an oath he took to demolish the Persians empire, and that he did ny conquering evrythinh they did and more.
Do not compare Olivers propaganda to Snyders art.
Persians inslaved and made it look preety.

I agree. brother you seem to have come to a full swing from approaching the movie from an open mind to someone that went to watch a doco.
I have watched the new 300, yes there where scenes that i thought where to extreme, but what excatly do you want my friend? If us, the Greeks cant produce a decent movie about our glorious history dont expect Hollywood to do the job for us.
Movie is art, and art imitates life. You say your dissapointed with how they show the persians as being black?? I watched it , they werent all black, and if anything Xerxes looked Indian more than anything. To tell you the truth , this movie in terms of racial look has got the Spartans and Persians down to a T. Geographicaly speaking Persians weren't juts made up of Iranians, we all know they were Asians (this the samurai ninja look for the imortals), Egyptians (there where plenty of black people in Egypt) and Indians /Pakistanis? Why so dissapointed?
Ok , i too squinted at Leonidas dropping to his knees, i thought it cheap, but the message is, that it got Xerxes hope up that the Spartans had finaly yielded, obviously the following scenes proves him wrong? I tought the ending was very deep and dramatic, and im not afraid to say it made my eyes water of the final speech by the surviving Spartan, and our the 30+ thousand Greeks charging to victory.
Why do we put so much attention to who looks like what.
SEE THIS, 300 GREEKS WHO BLED FOR US AND THE WORLD, AND HAVING THE COURAGE TO STAND UP TO THE PERSIANS WHO FREAKLY HAVE PUT OUR LITTLE MOTHERLAND TO GRIEF MORE THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY.
Enjoy the victory of our men on the big screen, it shows no lies, it happened, perhaps not to every detail but then again was our Herodotus there? Was his account so much down to every detail? Its just a directors perspective.
If you have actualy read his account(Herodotus) you will see he kinda favours the Persians more than anything.
Need i go into the Plutarch vs Herodotus of the event? Its all opponion and art. But...at the end of the day it happened, its our day.
Afiseto re the pethia. Ehetlaios 03-20-2007, 03:18 AM To tell you the truth , this movie in terms of racial look has got the Spartans
I was ready to leave if I ever saw a black spartan.
The most ridiculous movie ever is the 2000 movie "Jason and the Argonauts" where Orpheus and some other guy named Echion are black... olvios 03-20-2007, 06:42 AM Its aesthetics were disgusting It had nothing to do with even the comic and it was an offense against the battle of Thermopylae.Even for the sake of symbolism they went too far.I have nothing more to say. Lakonian 03-20-2007, 09:20 PM No probls.
I felt no threat when i watched it. Im glad it displayed the Persians the way it did. Anyone who has the intention to inslave another should be shown as a barbarian. At the end of the day , i have done my homework and know how it it went down , no need to sleep over it. Same with that attrocious movie Alexander, pankration 03-24-2007, 11:04 PM I loved the movie. It brought more pride to Greeks in 5 minutes than Troy and especially Alexander did in hours. However, it is not a documentary and should not be viewed as such. In all movies sides are chosen by the authors and producers and 300 is no exception. The Persians admittedly are portrayed as villains but if one looks at the movie carefully they will see that other Greeks are denigrated, certain Spartans are treacherous and the decision to stand at Thermopylae was not supported by the Spartan council. In effect, this movie is not a whitewash of the event. Persians or Iranians are upset by this and there has been a lot of nastiness from some of them on the net concerning this movie. I received an email of this "letter" from a person who claims he is a scholar and a Greek Iranian to boot.
Quite frankly I think the author makes some good points, takes care not to insult Greeks and presents a solid case for the inaccuracies of the film. For those of us who are quick to condemn Persians for taking the film so seriously, let me remind my friends here that most of us took Stone's Alex
ander VERY seriously and I know quite a few Greeks who absolutely refuse to watch it because of the terrible portrayal of Alexander. Anyway here's the website.
