Default Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone was one of the keys that made it possible to decode the meaning of hieroglyphs. In July 1799, General Napoleon Bonaparte's expedition to Egypt discovered the stone in a village to the West of the Nile River. On the stone the law issued on March 27, 196 BC by Ptolemy V to commemorate his enthronement is inscribed in three languages: hieroglyphs and demotic script and classical Greek. Knowing Greek, the Europeans were able to decrypt the hieroglyphs.

For nearly 1,500 years, no one could read hieroglyphs, the ancient Egyptian picture-writing. The French scholar Jean-Francois Champollion spent most of his life trying to break the code. He made his first breakthrough in 1822, while studying the Roseta Stone, and soon experts were able to read the inscriptions that cover many Egyptian artefacts.

The stone is a slab of black basalt, found near Rosetta in the delta.
Inscribed in 196 B.C., the Rosetta Stone was unearthed again in 1799. The text is repeated in hieroglyphs, demotic and Greek. Champollion could read Greek, and so he used this text to translate the other two scripts.
The text is a message of thanks to Pharaoh Ptolemy V.

Jean-Francois Champollion (1790-1832), is a brilliant linguist who had mastered 12 languages by age 16. The first hieroglyphs he deciphered were pharaoh's names. By 1824, he had translated most of the symbols and begun to unravel Egyptian grammar.

Here some two sources that given the Greek translation of the text

http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/co.../goto?id=OBJ67

The decree is inscribed on the stone three times, in hieroglyphic (suitable for a priestly decree), demotic (the native script used for daily purposes), and Greek (the language of the administration).

Macedonia: Ancient Origin of Macedonians Proved at Last

27 June 2006 | 16:11 | FOCUS News Agency

Skopje. After long-term studies Macedonian academician Tose Bosevski from the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA) and Professor Dr. Aristotle Tentov from the Electro-Technical Faculty have finished and deciphered a text in ancient Macedonian dating back to 2,200 years, FOCUS Agency reporter in Skopje announced.

The stone inscription is claimed to date back to 200 years ago and was called “The Stone of Rozeta”.

According to the decipherers the texts didn’t prove that ancient Macedonians used to have and created the Alexandria Library known as one of the 7 World Wonders.

The two scholars claim that the text written on the Rozeta Stone was with words that used to be identical with the modern Macedonian language and its dialects.

The pre-election situation in Macedonia is doing strange things, FOCUS correspondent commented.

idiocity without limits!!!!

Egyptian Demotic is the second script inscribed on the Rosetta Stone as I said .
It was deciphered before the hieroglyphic script, starting with the efforts of Silvestre de Sacy.

are wrong and the Skopjan MANU is right ?

I always try to keep my posts informative but sometimes I am so dumbfounded by stupidity that I have to just react. The Rosetta Stone has modern "Macedonian" on it? These "scholars" take the MALAKAS of the year award!!!

In the syllabic alphabet we have a big fact.

The existence of homonyms and homophonic words, words that have the same acoustic form but different meaning.

E.g. the Greek words again(πάλι) and fight (πάλη) sound the
same but they have different meaning.

So anyone can translate a text but with diffrent meaning. The most important is the decipherment of the text.

The Skopjans just play this linguistic game and brainwash the own people.
