Default Phillotas Incident

can someone please explain me what is the deal with phillotas?

to be more specific:

"Have you ever seen Philotas reject the language of [our] fathers heretofore? Indeed, he alone is averse to learning it. Let him then say, however, it is in his heart, since you will remember that he is opposed to our custom[s] as well as our language."
Quintus Curtius Rufus

because many skopians use it as a proof that the macedonians didnt speak greek...which is of course nonsense but ...!

thanx

Hi answrspls ,

Welcome in the MotW and I see that you come from Naples ..is that right??

This makes my explanation more easy , because you know the Italian polydialectic system. If you see the exact latin quote you must concentrate to the phrase "MORE EASILY" ..that means that if Philotas spoke in Macedonian dialect the other Greeks would of understand him "LESS EASILY" ..so it's not that they wouldn't understand him as if he spoke a foreign language.

To make it a modern example ...I happen to be 8 years in Ferrara , Italy and know pretty much about the "Ferrarese"and "Veneto" dialects , the river Po divides them they are so different ..but always interlligible.

I speak fluently the "common" Italian that evolved from Toscana and still when Ferraresians or Veneti talk to them selves I only understand 1 word over 10 ... things get even worst when I happen to meet "Napoletani" talk "Napoletano" ..."la non capisco proprio un caz** !!!".

Now Napoletani , Ferraresi and Veneti ALL speak Italian wright , but when they wanna communicate more easily they use the "common" italian of Dante's Florence ....

..Isn't the same thing with Macedonians and other Greeks , since ancient Greece was also a multi dialectic system ???..more than 30 dialects of greek !!!

From Bologna to the River Po there is a distance of about 50 km ..in this 50 km the modality of saying "have you understand ???" changes drasticaly :

...."common" Italian : "hai capito ???"

1) "Bolognese" : "ua(t) cape ??"
2) "Ferrarese" : "At capi ((mongul) , zio maial)??? "
3) "Veneto (Rovigo) : "Eto capio (, dio can) ??? "
