Well, sometimes they were military themes, but only after the Themes were introduced by the Byzantine administration. This did not happen until the 6th century A.D. (about the time "Macedonia" shifted) but all accounts mention that it was introduced in the lands of Asia Minor and NOT in the Balkans:

Sorry, but your explanation is still false. Before the "Themata", the administration was lacking military aspects...

...And NO DAMNED IT. THE DISCUSSION IS HERE IN ORDER FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND OUR POINT ABOUT MACEDONIA. IT HAS NO PLACE IN THE MOTW.

Here --

A through coverage of the themata.

It explicitly states, I am not going to bother going through it right now -- there were population movements and a reconstruction of the army. Yes the Bulk of the army was involved in Thessaloniki. Considering the Thracians were more or less mauled by the barbarian Bulgarian horde. There was some form of population replenishment between Philipopoulis, Constantinople & Thessalonika in that specific triangle.

Basil II was not only a military leader but also looked after the 'peasantry' and supplied them with much crops in that specific triangle. Many Byzantines fleed much futher south during the Bulgarian invasion.

I mean by all means have a debate it's healthy but when it starts turning ugly & below the belt well it becomes embarrasing.

no need for the "stupid answer" or "idiot/ clown" either. no need at all.

As for your question about the geographic definition of Macedonia and why FYROM is now included in such definitions id say its directly as a result of 19th century geo-politics and little else.
