Macedonian Phylai and Calendars according to inscriptions
Its quite interesting the naming of the tribes(phylai) and other subdivisions of some Macedonian cities found on inscriptions. From the surviving archaeological evidence these tribe names are clearly Greek and many of them are after gods and heroes.
Thus we have:
Kassandreia (Hippotadeis, Hippolyteis)
Thessalonike (Kekropis, Dionysias, Asklepias - IGx2,1,183;185;265)
Herakleia Lynkou (Asklepias, Artemisias, Hrakleios, Dionysias)
Especially Kassandreia seems to be a unique case of Macedonian city, having their own calendar. From the inscriptions excavated there, we have classic Macedonian months like Xandikos and Hyperberetaios but also months like Athenaion and Demetrion found in no other Macedonian city. In fact these two months are found only in Demetrias and the last one also in Histiaia from all Greek cities.
Demetrias, a city in Magnesia founded by the Macedonian Demetrius Poliorcetes had the most bizzare calendar in Greece. We know till now the following months from Demetrias calendar.
Athenaion
Areios
Artemision
Aphrodision
Demetrion
Deios
Hermaion
Hestios
Hephaistion
Posideon
We have a calendar clearly dealing with the name of the 12 ancient Greek gods.
